Immediate hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Allergy, 2002
Like penicillins, cephalosporins may provoke allergic reactions, especially IgE-mediated ones, such as urticaria and anaphylactic shock. They may occur because of sensitization to determinants shared with penicillins or to unique cephalosporin haptens.

IgE and Immediate Hypersensitivity

Dermatologic Clinics, 1990
Tissue mast cells play a central role in immediate hypersensitivity reactions. The clinical manifestations of these reactions appear to be dependent, in large part, on the anatomic location of the stimulated mast cells and the type of mediators released.

In Vitro Tests for Immediate Hypersensitivity

Annual Review of Medicine, 1988
In vitro measurement of IgE antibodies in serum has an established role in the study of allergic disease, but the place of in vitro tests in routine diagnosis is not well established. They are particularly helpful in confirming new allergens in the workplace and in situations where skin testing is potentially dangerous or technically not feasible.

Immediate Hypersensitivity Responses in Flatfish

Science, 1974
Fungal extracts that precipitate with human C-reactive protein caused immediate erythema on subdermal injection into marine flatfish. Only species with calcium-dependent serum precipitins to these fungi showed skin reactions. Immediate hypersensitivity in a nonreactive species could be induced after injection with serum from reactive species.
