Hypersensitivity pneumonitis or extrinsic allergic alveolitis is an immunologically mediated lung disease caused by repeated inhalations of organic antigens. The basic histologic lesion consists of a diffuse mononuclear cell infiltration of alveolar wall, alveoli, terminal bronchioles, and neighboring interstitium. The inflammation is often followed by

Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 2006Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is traditionally divided on clinical grounds into acute, subacute, and chronic stages. Most biopsy specimens come from patients in the subacute stage, in which there is a relatively mild, usually peribronchiolar, chronic interstitial inflammatory infiltrate, accompanied in most cases by poorly formed interstitial ...

Fansidar hypersensitivity pneumonitis
British Journal of Diseases of the Chest, 1987We report a subject who had Fansidar prescribed to him for the purpose of malaria prophylaxis. This agent is a combination of pyrimethamine and sulphadoxine. He subsequently developed severe hypersensitivity pneumonia and required mechanical ventilation. We believe that sulphadoxine was responsible for his illness.

Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
Clinics in Chest Medicine, 2012Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a complex syndrome caused by the inhalation of environmental antigens. Chronic HP may mimic other fibrotic lung diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Recognition of the antigen is important for diagnosis; avoidance of further exposure is critical for treatment.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a group of immunologically mediated lung diseases caused by the inhalation of environmental agents in susceptible individuals. Most HP patients are non-smokers and have been exposed to organic dusts from vegetable or animal products. Some HP cases are associated with exposures to relatively simple chemical compounds.

Fatal hypersensitivity pneumonitis
Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, 2005Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an uncommon, non-IgE-mediated interstitial lung disease caused by the inhalation of a variety of organic dusts, most commonly from exposure at work or in the pursuit of hobbies. Typically, after the disease is recognized, the causative allergen or environment is identified and treatment initiated through avoidance ...

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 2004
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), also known as extrinsic allergic alveolitis, is a granulomatous, inflammatory disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of antigenic organic particles or fumes. The disease may present as an acute, subacute, or chronic illness.

Bleomycin Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
Annals of Internal Medicine, 1978Three patients developed radiologic and functional pulmonary changes after bleomycin therapy similar to ones previously associated with administration of this drug. However, biopsy specimens showed a pattern consistent with hypersensitivity pneumonitis rather than the interstitial pneumonia usually reported in bleomycin pulmonary toxicity.

Familial hypersensitivity pneumonitis
The American Journal of Medicine, 1975Two families are described in which seven members of a total of 19 were found to have hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to exposure to avian antigens. Diagnosis was made on the basis of characteristic roentgenologic changes together with respiratory function and immunologic studies.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an important but underdiagnosed form of interstitial lung disease. Its clinical hallmark is recurrent or chronic pulmonary symptoms of variable severity associated with an array of systemic symptoms but without extrapulmonary structural abnormalities.
