An Open-Source Hypersonic Solver for Non-equilibrium Flows

open access: yesHavacılık ve Uzay Teknolojileri Dergisi, 2021
An implementation of a thermally non-equilibrium modeling on an existing open-source CFD solver is presented in this study. A newly coded open-source Navier-Stokes solver, hyperReactingFoam, including two-temperature model was developed within the ...

Multi-Objective RANS Aerodynamic Optimization of a Hypersonic Intake Ramp at Mach 5

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The work describes a systematic optimization strategy for designing hypersonic inlet intakes. A Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes database is mined using genetic algorithms to develop ideal designs for a priori defined targets.

Determination of density and concentration from fluorescent images of a gas flow

open access: yes, 2007
A fluorescent image analysis procedure to determine the distribution of species concentration and density in a gas flow is proposed. The fluorescent emission is due to the excitation of atoms/molecules of a gas that is intercepted by an electron blade ...

Coupled Fluid–Structure–Acoustic Analysis of Flow‐Induced Noise Control Using an Elastic Baffle in a Micro Channel

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This research explores how fluid flow, structural movement, and sound interact in an elastic baffle system. Using a numerical approach based on the finite element method, the study analyzes how noise and vibrations change with different baffle configurations. The findings reveal that shortening the baffle by half reduces noise transmission by 9%, while

Investigation of the Inverse Magnus Effect on a Rotating Sphere in Hypersonic Rarefied Flow

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Explorations involving long-endurance and maneuvering flights in the upper atmosphere, as well as research on atmospheric entries of space debris or asteroids, call for a full understanding of hypersonic rarefied flows.

Astrophysical bow shocks: An analytical solution for the hypersonic blunt body problem in the intergalactic medium

open access: yes, 2011
Aims: Bow shock waves are a common feature of groups and clusters of galaxies since they are generated as a result of supersonic motion of galaxies through the intergalactic medium. The goal of this work is to present an analytical solution technique for

Particle-based fluid dynamics: comparison of different BGK models and DSMC for hypersonic flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model as well as its extensions (ellipsoidal statistical BGK, Shakhov BGK, unified BGK) are used in particle-based fluid dynamics and compared with the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method (DSMC).

Hydroxyl‐Terminated Polybutadiene‐Based Molding Powders as an Alternative Route for Manufacturing Pressed Polymer‐Bonded Explosives

open access: yesPropellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, EarlyView.
This study presents an alternative method to manufacture polymer‐bonded explosives by partially curing an HTPB‐based molding powder prior to compaction. The study shows that the length of partial cure time before compaction directly influenced the geometric fidelity, homogeneity, compressive strength, density, and internal microstructure.

Sliding Mode Control in Aerospace Applications: A Survey

open access: yesInternational Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sliding mode control (SMC) enjoys robustness to matched and unmatched (in the case of minimum phase input‐output dynamics) bounded perturbations, and finite time convergence. Second‐order and higher‐order sliding mode control systems (2‐SMC/HOSMC) retain all the advantages of sliding mode control, but in addition can be applied to systems of ...
