Adding Value at Hypersonic Speed

45th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2009
In the test and evaluation (T&E) world, obtaining critical ground-test data requires that the effort be approached as a value-added task. By acquiring the ground-test data faster and cheaper, value is added to the overall flight system development program. At the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), a culture of maximizing the value of all T&E

Sublimation of graphite at hypersonic speeds

AIAA Journal, 1965
In this paper, a new theoretical model is presented for the sublimation of graphite at hypersonic flight speeds. The aerothermochemical interactions between dissociated air and graphite are treated by means of a nine-component model, including O, O2, N, N2, CO, CO2, C, C3, and CN.

Maneuvering Capabilities of Hypersonic Airframes

AIAA SCITECH 2023 Forum, 2023
The objective of this paper is to document weight dependent trends in the maneuverability and agility of extremely high-speed aircraft. At high true airspeeds, the maneuverability and agility may be impacted by fundamental structural, aerodynamic and ...

Disturbance and Phase Speed Measurements for Shock Tubes and Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Instability

, 2016
Measurements and calculations of the phase speed of disturbances observed in a small shock tube are made, via cross-correlation of successive frames from focusing schlieren videography and double focused laser differential interferometry. The efficacy of

A Review of High-Speed Aircraft Stability and Control Challenges

AIAA AVIATION 2023 Forum, 2023
This paper identifies key stability and control screening parameters needed to design general-purpose high-supersonic and hypersonic aircraft. A review of ground test, computation and flight test data of the rocket propelled Bell X-2, North American X-15,

Phugoid oscillations at hypersonic speeds

AIAA Journal, 1965
A theoretical analysis is made of the long-period (phugoid) oscillations of a lifting vehicle in hypersonic flight up to and including orbital speeds in any atmosphere. These oscillations correspond to a direct exchange between the kinetic energy and the potential energy along an oscillating flight path governed primarily by the trimmed steady-state ...

Oscillation of Bow-shock Waves at Hypersonic Speeds [PDF]

open access: possible43rd Fluid Dynamics Conference, 2013
Bow shock oscillation, which could have strong influences on the boundary layer transition especially in the stagnation region of re-entering capsule configurations, has been experimentally investigated with high speed shlieren imaging and fast response pressure and temperature fluctuation measurement in the stagnation region. Results indicate that the

Plume effects at hypersonic speeds

1992
A 7° semi-angle blunted cone has been tested at a Mach number of 8.2 in an intermittent hypersonic wind tunnel. The Reynolds number based on cone base-diameter was 2.8×105. The heat transfer rate distribution was measured along the cones surface and schlieren pictures were taken of the whole flow field.

Film cooling effectiveness on a large angle blunt cone flying at hypersonic speed

, 2005
Effectiveness of film cooling technique to reduce convective heating rates for a large angle blunt cone flying at hypersonic Mach number and its effect on the aerodynamic characteristics is investigated experimentally by measuring surface heat-transfer ...
