4D Bioprinted Self‐Folding Scaffolds Enhance Cartilage Formation in the Engineering of Trachea

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
A bilayer self‐folding scaffold, triggerable by humidity, is fabricated via 4D bioprinting for trachea engineering. An analytical model is derived to predict its radius of curvature, enabling its scalability. Cartilage progenitor cells seeded on the scaffold perceive scaffold final curvature and react to it, by enhancing the upregulation of pro ...

Mechanisms of IGF-1-Mediated Regulation of Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy and Atrophy

open access: yesCells, 2020
Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a key growth factor that regulates both anabolic and catabolic pathways in skeletal muscle. IGF-1 increases skeletal muscle protein synthesis via PI3K/Akt/mTOR and PI3K/Akt/GSK3β pathways. PI3K/Akt can also inhibit

Quantitative morphology of renal cortical structures during compensatory hypertrophy [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The compensatory hypertrophy in different renal cortical structures was studied in rats 10 and 21 days after unilateral nephrectomy (UNX). Quantitative morphological/stereological analysis revealed significant increases in total renal cortical volume ...

AMPK activation counteracts cardiac hypertrophy by reducing O-GlcNAcylation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) has been shown to inhibit cardiac hypertrophy. Here, we show that submaximal AMPK activation blocks cardiomyocyte hypertrophy without affecting downstream targets previously suggested to be involved, such as p70 ...

CRISPR‐MI and scRNA‐Seq Reveal TREM2's Function in Monocyte Infiltration and Macrophage Apoptosis During Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Development

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A method is developed for conducting genome‐wide CRISPR/Cas9 screening of monocyte infiltration in vivo (CRISPR‐MI) that is easily adaptable across a variety of disease models. Through the combination of CRISPR‐MI and scRNA‐Seq, this study discovers that Trem2 is a key regulator of early monocyte infiltration in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA ...

Human iPSC‐Derived Mononuclear Phagocytes Improve Cognition and Neural Health across Multiple Mouse Models of Aging and Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Short‐term intravenous treatments with iPSC‐derived mononuclear phagocytes (iMPs) improve cognitive decline and neural health in two mouse models of aging and in the 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. iMPs reduce levels of serum amyloid proteins that increase in aging and improve the health of hippocampal microglia and mossy cells.

Time spent with cats is never wasted: Lessons learned from feline acromegalic cardiomyopathy, a naturally occurring animal model of the human disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BackgroundIn humans, acromegaly due to a pituitary somatotrophic adenoma is a recognized cause of increased left ventricular (LV) mass. Acromegalic cardiomyopathy is incompletely understood, and represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality.

Endocycle-related tubular cell hypertrophy and progenitor proliferation recover renal function after acute kidney injury

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is considered largely reversible based on the capacity of surviving tubular cells to dedifferentiate and replace lost cells via cell division.

A Compartmentalized Joint‐on‐chip (JoC) Model to Unravel the Contribution of Cartilage and Synovium to Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A compartmentalized joint‐on‐chip (JoC) platform is here developed, modelling the interactions between cartilage and synovium in osteoarthritis (OA). Using independent culture and mechanical/biochemical stimulation, the JoC revealed how inflammation and mechanical damage drive mutual tissue changes.

Human Relaxin‐2 Fusion Protein Treatment Prevents and Reverses Isoproterenol‐Induced Hypertrophy and Fibrosis in Mouse Heart

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2019
Background Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death in Western countries, and there is a need for new therapeutic approaches. Relaxin‐2 is a peptide hormone that mediates pleiotropic cardiovascular effects, including antifibrotic, angiogenic ...
