Mechanisms of Hypocitraturia in Idiopathic Calcium-Stone Disease

1989
Low urinary citrate excretion is thought to be an important risk factor for calcium nephrolithiasis, and hypocitraturia is referred to as a common biochemical finding in this disease (1, 2).

Prevalence of Permanent Idiopathic Hypocitraturia in Calcium Stone Formers

1989
We retrospectively analyzed the frequency and peristence as well as the cause of hypocitraturia in 309 idiopathic Ca stone formers (205 males and 104 females) followed at Necker Hospital from January, 1983 until June, 1987. All subjects underwent serial determinations of daily urinary citrate excretion (UCitV).

Hypocitraturia: Diagnosis and Treatment.

The Urologic clinics of North America
Hypocitraturia is one of the most common and correctable risk factors for nephrolithiasis. It is primarily caused by alterations in acid-base status, with several identified etiologies driving its pathogenesis. Diagnosis is made by at least one 24-hour urine study.

Hypocitraturia: a risk factor for reduced bone mineral density in idiopathic hypercalciuria?

Pediatric Nephrology, 2005
The association between idiopathic hypercalciuria (IH) and reduced bone mineral density (BMD) has been described in adults and children. Frequently, hypocitraturia (HC) is an associated condition. To determine the effect that HC may have on bone metabolism of these patients, we studied 88 children with IH at diagnosis, divided into the following groups:

Hypocitraturia: a common but not well-known cause of nephrolithiasis.

The Netherlands journal of medicine, 2016
Nephrolithiasis is a frequent problem that can cause serious morbidity. When associated with an underlying metabolic disorder the recurrence rate is higher. Hypocitraturia is estimated to be present in 20-60% of cases. Several secondary causes are known. Potassium citrate is the primary treatment.

Hypocitraturia despite potassium citrate tablet supplementation.

MedGenMed : Medscape general medicine, 2007
Citrate supplementation is widely used in the prevention of recurrent nephrolithiasis with hypocitraturia. Potassium citrate is the most commonly used citrate agent for this indication. In patients with chronic diarrheal syndromes, the absorption of potassium citrate can be affected.
