The superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) is an autonomic plexus, located ventrally to the abdominal aorta and its bifurcation, innervating pelvic viscera. It is classically described as being composed of merely sympathetic fibres. However, post-operative complications after surgery damaging the peri-aortic retroperitoneal compartment suggest the existence

Neurons Projecting Rostrally in the Hypogastric Nerve of the Cat
Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1988Afferent, pre- and postganglionic nerve cell bodies projecting rostrally in the hypogastric nerve have been labelled retrogradely with horseradish peroxidase, in order to study number and location of these neurons. Labelled somata were found in the ganglia of the pelvic plexus, in sacral spinal ganglia and in the sacral spinal cord.

EXPERIMENTS attempting to distinguish between the effects of reserpine on sympathetic ganglia and on postganglionic fibres were carried out on the inferior mesenteric ganglia and the hypogastric nerves of the dog. Analysis of the tissues showed such large and variable amounts of both noradrenaline and adrenaline in the hypogastric ‘nerves’, coupled ...

Superior Hypogastric Nerve Block
Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, 2019Video Objective To introduce a presacral nerve block for regional anesthesia in the pelvis. Setting Selected for patients with midline pelvic pain, endometriosis, and dysmenorrhea. The context of these procedures is in a high volume benign minimally invasive gynecologic surgery service with a single advanced laparoscopic surgeon at two hospitals ...

Rate of Bladder Distension and Hypogastric Nerve Activity in the Cat
Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1991The effect of two rates of bladder filling on hypogastric efferent nerve activity was examined in cats anaesthetised with a continuous pentobarbitone infusion. At each level of bladder pressure the amount of hypogastric efferent nerve activity was less at the higher filling rate. This result may reflect a volume effect absent in pressure-nerve activity
