Multiscale analysis of the adult human superior hypogastric plexus and hypogastric nerve. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
Using tissue clearing and light‐sheet microscopy methods, we visualized the 3D mesoscopic arrangement of neural tracts, blood vessels and neurons within the adult human superior hypogastric plexus and hypogastric nerves, identifying the latter to contain thousands of neuronal cells bodies embedded along its entire length.

Innervation of the anal canal revisited through micro-CT imaging. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
This article demonstrates to utility of micro‐CT imaging for conduction micro‐CT experiments to explore the innervation of the pelvic area in human fetuses. It allows for the creation of intricate 3D models, which show that peripheral nerve crossings occur over the entire length of the rectum and hints towards development and sex related differences in

Anatomical location of the surgically identifiable bladder branch of the inferior hypogastric plexus for nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy

open access: yesGynecologic Oncology Reports, 2023
Objective: We aimed to demonstrate the entire structure of the inferior hypogastric plexus in the female pelvis focusing on surgically identifiable nerve bundles to the urinary bladder.

Functional outcomes after sphincter-preserving surgeries for low-lying rectal cancer: A review [PDF]

open access: yesPrecision and Future Medicine, 2021
Sphincter preservation and organ restoration during rectal cancer surgery avoids permanent stoma creation and diminishes psychosocial damages. However, decreased rectal volumes and sphincter dysfunction—including pelvic nerve damage—results in low ...

Phenol Neurolysis in Pain and Palliative Medicine. [PDF]

open access: yesPain Pract
ABSTRACT Background Pain is a common symptom in palliative care and affects patients' quality of life considerably. Standard analgesics are sometimes insufficient and are associated with substantial side effects. Neurolysis, the targeted destruction of nerves using thermal or chemical agents, offers an additional option for managing localized pain in ...

Surgical Anatomy and Dissection of the Hypogastric Plexus in Nerve-Sparing Radical Hysterectomy

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2023
Radical hysterectomy is a central surgical procedure in gynecological oncology. A nerve-sparing approach is essential to minimize complications from iatrogenic injury to the pelvic nerves, resulting in postoperative urinary, anorectal, and sexual ...

Autonomic Plexuses of the Female Sexual Organs Travel Within Pubocervical and Rectovaginal [Endopelvic] Fascia: A Rationale for 'Nerve-Aware' Vaginal Prolapse Repair. [PDF]

open access: yesClin Anat
ABSTRACT The connective tissue support of female pelvic viscera—endopelvic fascia—has been studied in fetal and immunohistochemical models to demonstrate its relationship with the autonomic nerves of the female pelvis. Due to a paucity of literature examining the gross anatomical relationships between endopelvic fascia and autonomic nerves in adult ...

Colorectal and uterine movement and tension of the inferior hypogastric plexus in cadavers

open access: yesChiropractic & Manual Therapies, 2012
Background Hypotheses on somatovisceral dysfunction often assume interference by stretch or compression of the nerve supply to visceral structures. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential of pelvic visceral movement to create tension of the
