New insights in gill/buccal rhythm spiking activity and CO2 sensitivity in pre- and post-metamorphic tadpoles (Pelophylax ridibundus)

open access: yes, 2013
Central CO2chemosensitivity is crucial for all air-breathing vertebrates and raises the question of itsrole in ventilatory rhythmogenesis. In this study, neurograms of ventilatory motor outputs recorded infacial nerve of premetamorphic and ...

Unmasking Hypoglossal Nerve Schwannomas Mimicking Submandibular Salivary Gland Tumors: Case Report of a Rare Presentation and Surgical Management

open access: yesSurgeries, 2023
Background: Schwannomas are solitary neurogenic tumors originating from the myelin-producing cells of the neural sheath. Hypoglossal nerve schwannomas are exceedingly rare, particularly those extracranially originating and mimicking a submandibular ...

The Association of Upper Airway Anatomy and Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation Response in OSA

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
CT‐derived measurements of tongue and craniofacial anatomy were evaluated in adults undergoing hypoglossal nerve stimulation for obstructive sleep apnea. Relative tongue volume was not significantly associated with treatment response. Exploratory analyses suggest that other anatomic features such as hyoid positions or transverse maxillary dimensions ...

Revisiting antagonist effects in hypoglossal nucleus: Brainstem circuit for the state-dependent control of hypoglossal motoneurons: A hypothesis.

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2015
We reassessed and provided new insights into the findings that were obtained in our previous experiments that employed the injections of combined adrenergic, serotonergic, GABAergic and glycinergic antagonists into the hypoglossal nucleus in order to ...

Modified Sleep Apnea Severity Index and Cardiovascular Risk in CPAP‐Intolerant OSA Patients

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
The modified sleep apnea severity index (mSASI) combines patient anatomy, weight, sleep study metrics, and symptoms into a composite OSA index ranging from 1 (least severe) to 3 (most severe). Our study found that mSASI correlated better with baseline cardiovascular risk measured by the 5‐year Framingham Risk Score compared to the AHI.
