Tissue distributions and seasonal dynamics of the hepatotoxic microcystins-LR and -RR in two freshwater shrimps, Palaemon modestus and Macrobrachium nipponensis, from a large shallow, eutrophic lake of the subtropical China [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
So far no information is available on microcystin (MC) contents in shrimps, prawns or crayfish from natural freshwaters. Tissue distributions and seasonal dynamics of the hepatotoxic MC-LR and -RR in two freshwater shrimps, Palaemon modestus and ...

Digestive Tract Structure and Seasonal Dynamics of Gut Microbiota in Hypomesus nipponensis from Bosten Lake

open access: yesAnimals
Digestive tract structure is a key indicator of fish health and environmental adaptation, while seasonal dynamics of the gut microbiota reflect host responses to environmental changes.

Fish assemblage at a newly restored tidal wetland reflects surrounding waterways in the Sacramento‐San Joaquin Delta

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction We studied the response of fish assemblages, water quality, and plankton following the completion of 700 acres of a 1184‐acre tidal restoration project (Dutch Slough Tidal Restoration; DSTR) in a system degraded by water diversions, channelization, non‐native species, and wetland loss.

Association of delta smelt with other small pelagic fishes suggests the potential for competition and proxy monitoring

open access: yesEndangered Species Research
Development of habitat occupancy models for protected species with low detection rates can be difficult; however a possible solution is to use proxy species.

Ultrastructure of Vitellogenic Ovarian Follicles and Morphogenesis of the Oocyte Envelope in the Eurasian Ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua Linnaeus 1758) (Teleostei, Perciformes)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 9, September 2026.
Ruffe's vitellogenic ovarian follicles consists of a single oocyte surrounded by follicular cells, a basal lamina, and thecal cells. The oocytes are polarized and covered by a primary envelope. The follicular cells diversify into micropylar and mainbody cells. The latter have dark and bright cytoplasms.

Divergent Thermal Habitat Responses to Climate Forcing in Shallow and Deep Lakes: The Role of Solar Radiation

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Climate warming is expected to reduce thermal habitat for cold‐water fishes, yet the magnitude and direction of habitat change may depend on interactions among multiple climatic drivers. We analyzed two contrasting lakes in the same region—Lake Kasumigaura (a shallow, eutrophic lake) and Lake Inawashiro (a deep, oligotrophic lake)—to clarify ...

A telomere-to-telomere reference genome assembly of the Hypomesus nipponensis

open access: yesScientific Data
A small cold-water teleost endemic to Northeast Asia, Hypomesus nipponensis possesses a short lifecycle, high fecundity, and rapid population growth, with extensive introductions for aquacultural purposes across East Asia.

Molecular Characterization of Eustrongylides sp. Infecting Channa punctata in Bangladesh

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
In this study, a total of 137 medium‐sized Channa punctata (17.5 ± 2.5 cm) were collected from different locations of Jamalpur and Netrokona district, Bangladesh and microscopically identified as belonging to the genus Eustrongylides based on morphological characteristics.

Transcriptome-Based Analysis of the Effects of Salt Stress on the Embryos of Hypomesus nipponensis

open access: yesAnimals
The increasing salinization and alkalization of inland waters in China pose a growing threat to the early developmental stages of fish. This study investigated the survival rates and transcriptomic response mechanisms of pond smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis)

High‐Throughput DNA Sequencing Reveals Gastric Content Composition and Inter‐Specific Variation in Pampus Fishes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
In this study, we employed high‐throughput sequencing of environmental DNA (eDNA) to conduct an analysis of the gastric contents composition and relative abundance from samples of P. argenteus and P. punctatissimus collected at the Jimiya Fish Pier in Qingdao, Shandong Province, and P. cinereus collected at the Qinglan Port in Wenchang, Hainan Province.
