Human Herpesvirus 8 Causes a Wide Spectrum of Disease in Liver Transplant Recipients and May be Donor Derived: Case Series and Systematic Review of an Emerging Challenge

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, EarlyView.
Among 135 cases of post‐liver transplant HHV8 disease (4 from NSW), presentations varied, and mortality was high (44%). Donor screening was rare, and donor‐derived infection was suspected in 33%. Survival improved with mTORi, reduced immunosuppression, chemotherapy, and, for non‐KS disease, donor screening. ABSTRACT Background Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8)

CCL26‐Mediated Modulation of Endothelial Secretome by Hypoxia‐Induced Tumor‐Derived Exosomes Enhances Metastatic Progression in Head and Neck Cancer

open access: yesHead &Neck, Volume 48, Issue 9, Page 2377-2393, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Tumor cells adapt to hypoxia by releasing hiTDExs enriched with bioactive molecules that modulate endothelial behavior and promote tumor progression. This study aimed to characterize how hypoxia‐induced HNSCC exosomes reshape the endothelial secretome and contribute to metastatic potential.

Insulin‐Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor Expression for Predicting PD‑1/PD‑L1 Inhibitor Response in Hypopharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Objectives Insulin‐like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF‐1R) is crucial for immunological control and the development of different types of cancer. It is still uncertain how the expression of IGF‐1R impacts hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) and

Non‐Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oropharynx: Primary Surgery or (Chemo)radiotherapy?

open access: yesHead &Neck, Volume 48, Issue 9, Page 2541-2556, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background In patients with locally advanced, non‐metastatic oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), surgery‐based and nonsurgical treatment approaches have not been adequately compared in randomized Phase III clinical trials. Current clinical guidelines recommend various surgical and nonsurgical strategies across disease stages for ...

Integrating Immunotherapy Into Head and Neck Surgery: Bridging Tumor Biology to Perioperative Decision‐Making, a Review

open access: yesHead &Neck, Volume 48, Issue 9, Page 2570-2583, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective To provide a comprehensive review of the biological rationale, clinical evidence, and practical perioperative management of immunotherapy for the head and neck surgeon. Summary Background Data Standard treatment for resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has reached a survival plateau, with over 50% of patients ...

Risk of Head and Neck Cancer in Former Smokers by Subsite: A Multicenter Analysis From the INHANCE Consortium

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 159, Issue 5, Page 1204-1217, 1 September 2026.
Tobacco use and alcohol consumption are primary risk factors for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, with combined use occurring in three‐quarters of cases. This large international study of former smokers shows that the risk reduction effect of smoking cessation occurs more slowly for laryngeal cancer than for other head and neck cancer subsites ...

Supraclavicular flap for pharyngocutanous fistula closure after laryng(pharyng)ectomy in the vessel depleted neck: A case series

open access: yesOral Oncology Reports
Background: Pharyngocutaneous fistula is a common complication after total laryngectomy or laryngopharyngectomy, especially in the setting of salvage surgery after (chemo)radiation. Alongside with the established pectoralis major flap and free flaps, the
