Hyposalivation og xerostomi

Aktuel Nordisk Odontologi, 2019
Saliva plays an important role in maintaining healthy oral mucosaand teeth as well as oral function. Hyposalivation designatespathological low saliva secretion while xerostomia designates thesubjective feeling of oral dryness. Xerostomia is often associatedwith hyposalivation and may severely affect nutritional intake, social interaction and quality of ...

Salivary secretion, taste and hyposalivation

Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 2007
Summary  Saliva has many essential functions. As the first digestive fluid in the alimentary canal, saliva is secreted in response to food, assisting intake and initiating the digestion of starch and lipids. During this process, saliva acts as a solvent of taste substances and affects taste sensitivity.

Xerostomia and Hyposalivation

Advances in Dental Research, 2000
Dry mouth must not be considered a trivial problem in the population, since it constitutes a phenomenon with many aspects relative to oral function as well as quality of life. Up until today, no global consensus has been reached with regard to the terminology of dry mouth, creating a substantial problem for research, education, diagnosis, and therapy.

Dental Caries Induction in Hyposalivated Rats

Caries Research, 1991
The effects of hyposalivation on the induction of dental caries and on the oral microflora were examined in SPF Sprague-Dawley rats with or without inoculation of oral streptococci. Significant dental caries was induced in hyposalivated rats, irrespective of the infection with oral streptococci including Streptococcus mutans.

Hyposalivation after undergoing stapedectomy

The Journal of the American Dental Association, 2012
Treatment for otosclerosis involves patients' undergoing stapedectomy. Inadvertent damage to the chorda tympani nerve's (CTN's) secretory fibers during stapedectomy can result in inadequate secretory stimulation of the submandibular salivary glands (SMSGs) and sublingual salivary glands (SLSGs).

Radioactive Iodine-Induced Hyposalivation: Case Report

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2019
Radioactive iodine (131I) is used in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancers. Collateral damage to the salivary glands (SGs) can be anticipated. Standard therapeutic doses of 131I often cause SG obstructive symptomatology and hyposalivation can develop with the higher 131I doses used for aggressive thyroid malignancies with or without ...

Xerostomia and Hyposalivation

Drugs & Aging, 1999
Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction (SGH) are prevalent in elderly populations, causing much discomfort and even difficulties in eating. SGH also increases the occurrence and severity of oral diseases and makes the patient susceptible to candidiasis. The principal causes of SGH and xerostomia are systemic diseases and drugs used daily.

Oral microbiota associated with hyposalivation of different origins

Oral Microbiology and Immunology, 2003
We analysed and compared the oral microbial flora in four groups with hyposalivation caused by radiation therapy (RT), primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), medication or unknown factors (Unknown), or neuroleptic treatment (Neuro). A control group with normal salivary secretion was also included.

Hyposalivation in elderly patients.

Journal (Canadian Dental Association), 2007
Saliva is a key element in oral homeostasis, oral function and maintenance of oral health. Dry mouth has multiple oral health consequences and affects quality of life. The incidence of dry mouth and its public health impact are increasing due to the aging population, the effects of some systemic diseases, and medical management and commonly prescribed ...

Dental Plaque pH and Micro-organisms during Hyposalivation

Journal of Dental Research, 2006
We have previously reported that minor gland and whole saliva flow rates and salivary proteins showed differences in individuals with primary Sjögren’s syndrome or head and neck radiation therapy, compared with controls ( Eliasson et al., 2005 ). We now hypothesize that pH and number of acidogenic micro-organisms in dental plaque as well as saliva ...
