Hypotonic oral rehydration solution in acute diarrhoea: a controlled clinical trial

Acta Paediatrica, 1995
In a controlled trial, a hypotonic oral rehydration solution (ORS) (Na+67, K+20, CP66, citrate 7, glucose 89mmol/1 osmolality 249 mosmol/kg) was compared with a standard WHO‐ORS (Na+90, K+20, Cl‐80, citrate 10, glucose lllmmol/1, osmolality 311 mosmol/kg) in 60 children aged 5‐24 months with acute watery diarrhoea.

Maintenance Fluid Therapy: Isotonic Versus Hypotonic Solutions.

The Veterinary clinics of North America. Small animal practice, 2017
The goal of maintenance fluid therapy in small animals is to replace normal ongoing losses of water and salts when oral intake is withheld. Hospitalized dogs and cats may have multiple stimuli for antidiuretic hormone release that disrupt normal osmoregulation and predispose to water retention. Severe illness promotes retention of both sodium and water

A hypotonic storage solution did not prolong the viability of RBCs

Transfusion, 2000
BACKGROUND: Hypotonic storage solutions and WBC filtration are both reported to improve RBC viability. This study tested the ability of an investigational hypotonic storage solution (AS‐24, Medsep Corp.) to extend the viability of liquid‐stored RBCs to 8 weeks.STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In a pair of crossover trials, 11 RBC units, WBC‐reduced by ...

Incorporation of [3H]UMP into yeast spheroplasts in a hypotonic solution

Experimental Cell Research, 1977
Incorporation of radioactive UMP ([3H]-uridine-5′ monophosphate) into RNA was examined in spheroplasts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a hypotonic solution. The reaction, which also takes place in cells lacking mitochondrial DNA, is inhibited by ethidium bromide (EB) (250 μg/ml), requires divalent ions, and is only slightly affected by 50 μg/ml of α ...

Contractile Responses in Human Umbilical Arteries to Hyper- and Hypotonic Solutions

Journal of Vascular Research, 1994
The effects of hyper- and hypotonic solutions on vascular smooth muscle were studied using helical strips from human umbilical arteries. Hypertonic solutions evoked a biphasic contraction that consisted of early and late contractions. Verapamil or Ca(2+)-free conditions inhibited early contraction induced by tonicity of 340-539 mosm/kg.

Clinical experience with a hypotonic oral rehydration solution in acute diarrhoea

Acta Paediatrica, 1993
A hypotonic oral rehydration salts (ORS) solution with total osmolality of 224 rnosmol/l was compared in an open clinical trial with an isotonic (osmolality 304 mosmol/l) ORS solution for the treatment of dehydration due to acute diarrhoea. Both ORS solutions had the same electrolyte composition with a Na+ concentration of 60 mmol/l. Children given the

[Intracranial pressure and hypotonic infusion solutions].

Der Anaesthesist, 2009
The physiological osmolality of plasma is 288+/-5 mosmol/kgH2O when measured by freezing-point depression. The theoretical osmolarity (290 mosmol/l) calculated from composition, osmotic coefficient (0.93) and water content (0.94) is practically identical.

SUSCEPTIBILITY OF MAMMALIAN ERYTHROCYTES TO HEMOLYSIS WITH HYPOTONIC SOLUTIONS

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1937
Clinicians as well as physiologists have displayed interest in the varied susceptibilities to hemolysis by hypotonic solutions of the erythrocytes of different species of mammals and of human erythrocytes under different pathologic conditions. The variations have been somewhat vaguely ascribed to differences in "osmotic resistance" and in "permeability"
