Hypovitaminosis A: International Programmatic Issues

The virtual elimination of vitamin A deficiency and all its consequences is high on the political agenda as a solvable public health problem by the end of the decade. Five to six times more children in the developing world are likely to be subclinically than clinically deficient. Subclinical deficiency can be detected by newer methodological approaches.

Hypovitaminosis A in Patients with Mucocutaneous Candidiasis

Levels of vitamin A and (3-carotene in serum were studied in twelve patients with mucocutaneous candidiasis. Subnormal levels of vitamin A were found in seven patients. The remaining five patients had normal concentrations (20-70 Etg/100 ml), but they were all in the lower half of the range. All 12 patients had normal levels of (-carotene.

Electroretinographic examinations performed according to the international standard were used in two patients with alimentary hypovitaminosis A. In one instance a mentally caused long-term deficiency of dietary vitamin A intake was involved, in the second instance a fistula from the proximal jejunum into the transverse colon.

Case reportVitamin A deficiency was diagnosed in a herd of 97 19‐month‐old Braford heifers in the Mitchell Grass Downs (Astrebla spp.) bioregion of Hughenden in north‐western Queensland during November 2015. Two heifers died after a 48‐h history of sternal recumbency and of the 19 that had neurological signs, 7 were blind.

Two cases of a heavy hypovitaminosis A (tumor of the pancreas and an insufficient resorption accompanying the syndrome of a short intestine) are presented. The eye symptomatology consisted of lowered dark-adaption curve, absent electrical reactivity and lowered contrast sensitivity.
