Abstract The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (FPM) is an endangered unionid which has a glochidium larva that attaches to the gills of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar or brown trout S. trutta, although some FPM populations have been shown to exclusively attach to only one of these species.

Abstract Natural history collections assembled before modern‐day, anthropogenic declines in species occurrence and abundance can provide essential data for conservation and biogeographic research. Digitizing old, commonly ‘orphaned’ collections in small institutions without professional curators increases local community access to specimens, as well as

The Impact of Exploitation on Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Hyriidae) in the Tocantins River, Brazil [PDF]
Freshwater mussels in the Tocantins River are exploited for their shells to make buttons. Data were collected on mussel density, size frequency distribution, habitat and exploitation level at five sites. The most abundant species is Paxyodon syrmatophorus (Meuschen, 1781) and is preferred by fishermen.

Conchological and anatomical studies of the glochidium of Diplodon martensi (lhering, 1893) were performed on samples collected in a small river, tributary from the Cai River, that belong to the Jacui River sub-basin in south-eastern Brazil. The parasitic development of the glochidium was observed in laboratory on a small cichlid fish Gymnogeophagus ...

ABSTRACT Fine‐scale environmental drivers shape freshwater mollusc assemblages in urban semiarid rivers. We examined how substrate composition and water chemistry influence mollusc richness and abundance along a polluted stretch of a river in the Brazilian semiarid region. Surveys at five sites recorded 2479 individuals.

ABSTRACT Freshwater mussels are ecosystem engineers: They modify substrates through burrowing, mediate water quality through filtration, provide food and habitat for other organisms and play a substantial role in the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients; they are also seriously threatened globally.
