100 years of physiology, discrimination and wonder

open access: yesDiabetic Medicine, Volume 38, Issue 12, December 2021., 2021
Abstract There has been 100 years of research detailing the role of insulin in glucose, protein and free fatty acid metabolism. We explore the learnings though evolution and changes in management with an understanding of how it has impacted the care of people with diabetes.

Functional evolution of the feeding system in rodents. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The masticatory musculature of rodents has evolved to enable both gnawing at the incisors and chewing at the molars. In particular, the masseter muscle is highly specialised, having extended anteriorly to originate from the rostrum.

Demography and Population Dynamics of a Small Mammal Assemblage in Chilean Semiarid Thorn-Scrub Habitat: A 30-Year Study. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Using the longest and most comprehensive demographic database available in temperate South America, we characterize the population dynamics of an entire community of small mammals in a semiarid environment in north‐central Chile using a superpopulation CMR modeling framework.

Cortisol resistance in the degu (Octodon degus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Cortisol resistance has also been reported in the degu, Octodon degus, a New World hystricomorph endemic to central Chile. The degu is used as a model for studies of stress and diurnal rhythms, parental behaviour and female masculinization.

The primary structures of pancreatic ribonucleases from African porcupine and casiragua, two hystricomorph rodent species [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
The amino acid sequences of the pancreatic ribonucleases from African porcupine (Hystrix cristata) and casiragua (Proechimys guairae, a caviomorph rodent species related to the coypu) were determined.

Isolation of Leptospira serovar Pomona from a crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata, L., 1758)

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 6, Issue 4, Page 985-991, November 2020., 2020
In this paper, the isolation and characterization of pathogenic Leptospira spp. from the kidney of a crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) is reported for the first time. The isolated strain was identified as Leptospira interrogans serogroup Pomona serovar Pomona.

Evolution of the zygomasseteric construction in Rodentia, as revealed by a geometric morphometric analysis of the mandible of Graphiurus (Rodentia, Gliridae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
International audienceGraphiurus is a peculiar taxon among the monophyletic Gliridae (order Rodentia) in showing hystricomorphy of the zygomasseteric architecture of the skull [large infraorbital foramen (IOF), and correlative muscular arrangements).

Understanding how environmental factors influence reproductive aspects of wild myomorphic and hystricomorphic rodents [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Reproduction, 2021
Myomorphic and hystricomorphic rodents are vital for maintaining various ecosystems around the planet. This review enables a better understanding of how these rodents respond to environmental factors and adapt to climate adversities. Innumerable factors, such as photoperiod, rainfall, and temperature, can impair or contribute to the quality of rodent ...
