A ~6 Mpc overdensity atz≃ 2.7 detected along a pair of quasar sight lines: filament or protocluster? [PDF]

open access: bronzeAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2014
Simulations predict that gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is distributed in filamentary structures that connect dense galaxy clusters and form the cosmic web. These structures of predominantly ionized hydrogen are difficult to observe directly due to their lack of emitting regions.

VDES J2325−5229 az= 2.7 gravitationally lensed quasar discovered using morphology-independent supervised machine learning [PDF]

open access: bronzeMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2016
We present the discovery and preliminary characterization of a gravitationally lensed quasar with a source redshift $z_{s}=2.74$ and image separation of $2.9"$ lensed by a foreground $z_{l}=0.40$ elliptical galaxy. Since the images of gravitationally lensed quasars are the superposition of multiple point sources and a foreground lensing galaxy, we have

Intrinsic Properties of the 〈z〉 = 2.7 Lyα Forest from Keck Spectra of Quasar HS 1946+7658 [PDF]

open access: closedThe Astrophysical Journal, 1997
We present the highest quality Lyman Alpha forest spectra published to date, from the QSO HS 1946+7658. The distribution of H I column densities is a power law of slope -1.5 from Log N = 12.1 - 14. This power law can extend to N = 0, because lines weaker than Log N = 12.1 do not have a large H I optical depth.

Rerunning OCR: A Machine Learning Approach to Quality Assessment and Enhancement Prediction [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Data Mining and Digital Humanities, 2022
Iterating with new and improved OCR solutions enforces decision making when it comes to targeting the right candidates for reprocessing. This especially applies when the underlying data collection is of considerable size and rather diverse in terms of ...

Effects of Low-Intensity Resistance Exercise with Slow Movement and Tonic Force Generation on Short-Term Glycemic Variability in Healthy Subjects: A Randomized Controlled Study

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Resistance exercise improves daily glycemic control. Low-intensity resistance exercise with slow movements and tonic force generation (LST) is a resistance exercise protocol that can increase skeletal muscle mass and strength without considerable ...

Romanian Question Answering Using Transformer Based Neural Networks

open access: yesStudia Universitatis Babes-Bolyai: Series Informatica, 2022
Question answering is the task of predicting answers for questions based on a context paragraph. It has become especially important, as the large amounts of textual data available online requires not only gathering information but also the task of ...

Enantioselective Recognition of Lysine and Phenylalanine Using an Imidazole Salt-Type Fluorescent Probe Based on H8-BINOL

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
An imidazole bromide fluorescent probe (R)-1 based on chiral H8-BINOL was synthesized with a high yield; it was found to have good enantioselective recognition of lysine and phenylalanine using fluorescence analysis.

Three-Dimensional-Derived Echocardiographic Left Ventricular Structure and Function and Indices from the 12-Lead Electrocardiogram across the Menstrual Cycle in Healthy Physically Active Females: An Exploratory Study

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease, 2023
Background: The impact of the menstrual phases on left ventricular (LV) structure and function using 3D echocardiography and resting electrocardiogram (ECG) in healthy, eumenorrheic, and physically active females has not been investigated.
