Binding of Object Representations by Synchronous Cortical Dynamics Explains Temporal Order and Spatial Pooling Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
A key problem in cognitive science concerns how the brain binds together parts of an object into a coherent visual object representation. One difficulty that this binding process needs to overcome is that different parts of an object may be processed by ...

Moments of Coinless Quantum Walks on Lattices

open access: yes, 2015
The properties of the coinless quantum walk model have not been as thoroughly analyzed as those of the coined model. Both evolve in discrete time steps but the former uses a smaller Hilbert space, which is spanned merely by the site basis.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

ARISTOTLE’S CONTRAST BETWEEN EPISTEME AND DOXA IN ITS CONTEXT (POSTERIOR ANALYTICS I.33) [PDF]

open access: yesManuscrito, 2019
Abstract Aristotle contrasts episteme and doxa through the key notions of universal and necessary. These notions have played a central role in Aristotle’s characterization of scientific knowledge in the previous chapters of APo. They are not spelled out in APo I.33, but work as a sort of reminder that packs an adequate characterization of scientific ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Adhesion and friction patterns of CVD-grown monolayer flakes induced by vacancy-rich defect domains

open access: yesJPhys Materials
A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between defects concentration, optical properties and mechanical behavior of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is crucial for their integration as active components in micro- and ...

On the Central Charge of Spacetime Current Algebras and Correlators in String Theory on AdS3

open access: yes, 2015
Spacetime Virasoro and affine Lie algebras for strings propagating in AdS3 are known to all orders in $\alpha'$. The central extension of such algebras is a string vertex, whose expectation value can depend on the number of long strings present in the ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

The Excess of JWST Bright Galaxies: A Possible Origin in the Ground State of Dynamical Dark Energy in the Light of DESI 2024 Data

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Recent observations by JWST yield a large abundance of luminous galaxies at z ≳ 10 compared to that expected in the ΛCDM scenario based on extrapolations of the star formation efficiency measured at lower redshifts.
