Navigating Changing Economies and Rural Policy: Left Behind Places or Left Behind People?

open access: yesSociologia Ruralis, Volume 65, Issue 4, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Place‐based studies of regional policy ask how places can better adapt to economic and social changes. This is especially prescient for research and policy supporting ‘left‐behind’ regions. This paper amends this question, asking not how placesadapt, but how the people living and working within them navigate change.

Modeling Thermodynamic Behavior of Ultrathin Films: Comparison with Experiments

open access: yesChemPhysChem, Volume 26, Issue 17, September 10, 2025.
A 3D thermodynamic model in adapted to 2D ultrathin polymer films. Compression isotherms of various polymers are fitted without adjustable parameters. The model predicts polymer film thickness agrees with experiments. This work aims to model the thermodynamic behavior of ultrathin polymer films.

Effectiveness of Key Biodiversity Areas in representing global avian diversity

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are the largest and most complete network of significant sites for the global persistence of biodiversity. Although important sites for birds worldwide have been relatively well assessed, a key question is how effectively the global KBA network represents avian diversity.

Real‐time measurement of entropy production and export in humans: A step toward entropically informed medicine

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1550, Issue 1, Page 283-295, August 2025.
Biological organisms maintain internal structure and function through heat‐ and entropy‐producing processes, which also require external export to the environment. Using calorimetry, we report the impairment of entropy export in humans exercising under heat stress, leading to entropy accumulation, in association with increasing age, decreased fitness ...

Evolutions of Omni‐Channel Fulfillment Performance: An In‐Depth Case Study in Grocery Retailing

open access: yesJournal of Operations Management, Volume 71, Issue 5, Page 651-669, July 2025.
ABSTRACT The rapid adoption of omni‐channel strategies has prompted grocery retailers to reconfigure their back‐end fulfillment operations to efficiently and effectively meet the demands of online and offline retail channels. Viewing back‐end fulfillment operations in omni‐channel grocery retail as a complex adaptive system, we present an eight‐year ...
