SummarySome aspects of the weights of over 5,500 birds of 79 species, mostly migrants, captured in spring at an oasis on the northern edge of the Sahara, are discussed. Mean weights for five species were 26–44% below those of fat birds (those containing at least 30% lipid) weighed about the same time on the south side of the desert.

An efficient method of interfacing between patient related data and the signal processing methods used to interpret these data is a critical component for a successful patient monitor, particularly for use in high dependency environments. This paper describes the approach adopted in the IBIS project. The key elements of the system are first introduced.

We present very preliminary results on the imaging capabilities of the IBIS instrument, the gamma ray imager on board ESA’s INTEGRAL satellite, regarding the coded mask subsystem. For this purpose we perform a simulation of a pointed observation to the Galactic Centre region and investigate the detection of the most prominent sources.
