Detection of Leptospira in cane toads (Rhinella jimi) from urban and rural Paraíba, Brazil

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Leptospirosis is a significant zoonosis in tropical regions, where poor sanitation and favourable climate aid its spread. Synanthropic animals such as the cane toad (Rhinella jimi), which share environments with both people and wild and domestic animals, may harbour Leptospira and contribute to urban and rural transmission cycles ...

Exploring Protein-Protein Interactions as Drug Targets for Anti-cancer Therapy with In Silico Workflows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We describe a computational protocol to aid the design of small molecule and peptide drugs that target protein-protein interactions, particularly for anti-cancer therapy. To achieve this goal, we explore multiple strategies, including finding binding hot

Seasonal variation in wild pig (Sus scrofa) diet revealed by DNA metabarcoding

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Using DNA metabarcoding of fecal samples, we investigated the diet of wild pigs at an extensive bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem within Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge in Southern Arkansas. We found that wild pig diet was highly diverse and included at least 74 plant families and 106 genera and 23 species of vertebrates.

INTEGRAL observations of Sco X-1: evidence for Comptonization up to 200 keV

open access: yes, 2013
We have analyzed a long-term database for Sco X-1 obtained with the telescope IBIS onboard the INTEGRAL satellite in order to study the hard X-ray behavior of Sco X-1 from 20 up to 200 keV.

Matching times of leading and following suggest cooperation through direct reciprocity during V-formation flight in ibis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
One conspicuous feature of several larger bird species is their annual migration in V-shaped or echelon formation. When birds are flying in these formations, energy savings can be achieved by using the aerodynamic up-wash produced by the preceding bird ...
