The frozen part of the terrestrial climate system is referred to as the cryosphere. The cryosphere consists of several subsystems, namely ice sheets, ice shelves, ice caps, glaciers, sea ice, lake ice, river ice, ground ice and snow. Ice sheets are ice masses of continental size (area greater than 50,000 km2) which rest on solid land, whereas ice ...

The interplay of temperature (air and substrata), humidity and air movement in caves, on a background of peculiar cave morphology, is responsible for the genesis, accumulation and dynamics of ice in caves. With few exceptions, the vast majority of ice caves occur in regions where the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) is well above 0°C, the peculiar ...

Abstract The article discusses climatic characteristics in the drift‐ice zone, including circulation conditions, radiation regime, temperature and pressure fields, cloud micro‐structure and the climate of the free atmosphere. The significance of climatic studies in this region is emphasized in connection with plans for resource development and ...

During the last 10 or 20 years, interest in the continental cryosphere (I do not consider sea ice) as a component of the climate system has increased tremendously. There seem to be two main reasons for this. In the first place, deep drilling on the major ice sheets and subsequent analysis of the ice cores has established a unique record of climate ...

Abstract The paper deals primarily with the use of stable isotopic ratios to determine the former climate of ice sheets. Studies of temperature profiles throughout ice sheets have shown that for at least several thousand years, changes of isotopic δ ratios have been proportional to changes of surface temperatures; this relationship is

Sea Ice in Coupled Climate Models
2019We give an overview of the representation of sea ice in coupled climate models. Such representation is based on the conservation of heat, mass, and momentum to represent the interaction between sea ice and the oceanic and atmospheric forcing. We introduce the underlying physical laws and discuss their numerical implementation.

Icing at the McKinley Climatic Laboratory
42nd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2003The McKinley Climatic Laboratory is engaged in a major upgrade to provide an improved capability for simulating large scale ground fog icing conditions for aircraft. The new capability will also provide an ability to simulate low speed in-flight icing conditions.
