Using Ice-Cooled Condensers in Chemistry Laboratory

Journal of Chemical Education, 2003
An ice-cooled condenser, consisting of a jacket built around a tube open to the atmosphere with an outlet for removal of melting ice, is designed for use in academic laboratory classes. The apparatus can be used in place of standard water cooled condensers in setups where refluxing or distillation is performed.

Laboratory Studies of Astronomical Ices: Reaction Chemistry and Spectroscopy

Accounts of Chemical Research, 2020
ConspectusScientists have had evidence for molecules in both comets and interstellar space since the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since then, extraterrestrial molecules ranging from simple diatomics to C70 to amino acids have been detected and identified through remote spectroscopy, spacecraft, and sample return missions. These achievements have been

Three milieux for interstellar chemistry: gas, dust, and ice

Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2014
The interdisciplinary science of astrochemistry is 45 years of age, if we pinpoint its origin to have occurred when the first polyatomic molecules were detected in the interstellar gas. Since that time, the field has grown remarkably from an esoteric area of research to one that unites scientists around the globe.

Buffer gas cooled ice chemistry. II. Ice generation and mm-wave detection of molecules desorbed from an ice

The Journal of Chemical Physics
This second paper in a series of two describes the chirped-pulse ice apparatus that permits the detection of buffer gas cooled molecules desorbed from an energetically processed ice using broadband mm-wave rotational spectroscopy. Here, we detail the lower ice stage developed to generate ices at 4 K, which can then undergo energetic processing via UV ...
