Engineering Properties of Sea Ice [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1977
AbstractAs the continental shelves of the Arctic become important as source areas for the oil and minerals required by human society, sea ice becomes an increasing challenge to engineers. The present paper starts with a consideration of the different fields of engineering which require information on sea ice with the tasks ranging from the design of ...

Avoiding slush for hot-point drilling of glacier boreholes

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2021
Water-filled boreholes in cold ice refreeze in hours to days, and prior attempts to keep them open with antifreeze resulted in a plug of slush effectively freezing the hole even faster.

Angle of repose of granulated ice: effect of wood ash

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology
New experiments have revealed that the addition of a small amount of wood ash doubles the angle of repose of granulated ice at −10°C, but has little effect at −30°C. It is hypothesized that this behavior may be explained in terms of the freezing of water

Image Content Engine (ICE) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The Image Content Engine (ICE) is being developed to provide cueing assistance to human image analysts faced with increasingly large and intractable amounts of image data. The ICE architecture includes user configurable feature extraction pipelines which produce intermediate feature vector and match surface files which can then be accessed by ...

Comparison of temperature indices for three IPCC SRES scenarios based on RegCM simulations for Poland in 2011–2030 period [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The regional climate model RegCM3 is used to investigate potential future changes of temperature indices in Poland for the period 2011–2030. The model is forced by ECHAM5/MPI-OM GCM data from World Data Centre (WDCC) database for the 1971–1990 ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Self-Supervised Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Chest X-Ray Classification

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2021
Chest radiography is a relatively cheap, widely available medical procedure that conveys key information for making diagnostic decisions. Chest X-rays are frequently used in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases such as pneumonia or COVID-19.

Recent Development in Ice Engineering

open access: yesHydro Science & Marine Engineering, 2021
Ice Engineering is associated with how to solve challenges from different kinds of ice, such as, sea ice, river ice, lake ice, icing, and snow in cold regions. The aim is to design special structures which could resist structural and global impact from drifting ice and freezing ice.
