Theoretical Model of River Ice Jams

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1976
A mathematical analysis is developed to describe the evolution and characteristics of river ice jams. The principal components of the analytical model are the static force equilibrium of the fragmented ice cover; the unsteady continuity equations for the frozen and liquid water; the nonuniform unsteady momentum relation for the flow; and relations in ...

Downstream Transition of River Ice Jams

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1986
The granular mass theory of river ice jams is extended to their downstream transition as a means of improving understanding of conditions at jam toe. The theory is coupled with the equations of motion under, and seepage through, the jam and the resulting differential equations are solved numerically.

Hydraulic resistance of river ice jams

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2018
The hydraulic resistance of river ice jams consists of the resistance due to the seepage flow through the jam and the resistance due to the shear stress on the undersurface of the jam. Existing empirical formulations attributed the entire jam resistance to the undersurface resistance of the jam, but relate the jam resistance to jam thickness with ...
