Hydraulic Roughness of Breakup Ice Jams

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2001
Lack of field data on the thickness and roughness of river ice jams inhibits reliable calibration of ice jam models and can result in erroneous evaluation of important physical parameters. Detailed thickness data that have been obtained on several ice jams by means of a remote profiling technique reveal a highly irregular underside.

Ice jam mitigation

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1990
In Canada, flooding due to the rise in water levels upstream of an ice jam, or the temporary exceedance of the flow and ice-carrying capacity of a channel upon release of an ice jam, has resulted in the loss of human life and extensive economic losses.

Ice Jam Data Collection

1994
Abstract : Ice jam data collection is necessary to gain information on ice jam events, which may occur rarely and are often short-lived, but can at the same time cause large damages. An ice jam data collection program involves field data collection, review of existing hydrologic, hydraulic, meteorological, and ice records, and a search of historical ...

Shokotsu River ice jam formation

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2003
A spring ice jam occurred in the Shokotsu River in March 1995. This has been the only known ice jam in this river since 1955. This paper discusses the ice jam processes and investigates the causes of the Shokotsu River ice jam by analyzing the available hydrometeorological data as well as hydraulic and geometric characteristics of the river.

Bend ice jams: laboratory observations

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1992
Presented herein are the results of laboratory experiments aimed at obtaining preliminary insights into characteristic features of ice jams in river bends. The experiments, which focused on jams comprising a continuum of ice pieces small compared to river width, were carried out using a curved flume and polypropylene beads to simulate ice pieces. They

Formation of Ice Covers and Ice Jams in Rivers

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1966
Ice covers on rivers are stressed in the downstream direction mainly by the friction of the under flow and the effect of the slope of the water line. Analysis show that in wide rivers, these stresses are the main factor governing the equilibrium thickness of the cover.

River Ice Dynamics and Ice Jam Modeling

2001
This paper presents the formulation, numerical method, and field applications of a numerical model for dynamic transport and jamming of surface ice in rivers. The model considers the ice as a continuum. The internal ice resistance is described by a viscous-plastic constitutive law, in which the pressure term is formulated by modifying the Coulomb type ...
