ABSTRACT Zaretsky, Yu.K., Chumichev, B.D. and Solomatin, V.I., 1979. Ice behaviour under load. Eng. Geol., 13: 299–309. Ice is a component of frozen grounds that determines their rheological properties. Deformation and failure of ice under load are regarded by the authors as a single process due to the kinetics of defect development in the ...

Radical Photochemistry in Oxygen‐Loaded Ices
Angewandte Chemie, 2006The photochemistry of molecular oxygen and water films is a fundamental and growing field of investigation for which the main interest is a full understanding of the “far-out” chemistry relevant to the new field of astrobiology. Another field of interest concerns the study of oxygen and water radiation chemistry relevant to the medical applications of ...

Ice Loads on Azimuthing Podded Propulsors
23rd International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, Volume 3, 2004The paper describes the experimental setup and presents some of the results obtained. The experimental system is designed and built to measure the loads on the blade, on the propeller shaft bearings, on the shaft, and on the whole propulsion unit (global loads). Experiments have been conducted at various headings form 0° to 180°, thrust directions (aft

Assessment of Ship Ice Loads in Pack Ice
SNAME 9th International Conference and Exhibition on Performance of Ships and Structures in Ice, 2010World trade and exploration for natural gas/oil in the Arctic/Subarctic has greatly stimulated the development of shipping in arctic regions. More and larger commercial vessels have or will operate in the harsh environments. This stretches the validity of the existing ship design rules and raises concerns. To deal with this challenge, owners, designers,

Peak Ice Loads on a Lifeboat in Pack Ice Conditions
OTC Arctic Technology Conference, 2014Abstract Field testing of a modified Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC) was conducted in March 2013 in managed level ice conditions. This testing was part of a multi-year trials program, conducted by the National Research Council (NRC), which aims to investigate design considerations for a ...

Ice Sheet Loads on Marina Piles
Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division, 1978Two marina piles were instrumented with steel sleeves. The steel sleeves were fixed rigidly to the top of the piles. The bottoms of the sleeves were free to freeze into the ice sheet. Two transducers were placed on each sleeve above the water level to measure the vertically acting tension and compression forces imposed on the pile by the ice sheet ...

A 9 year field program was undertaken from 19911992 to 19992000 to (i) measure the loads in the ice sheet near a dam, (ii) measure the load distribution between a gate and a pier, and (iii) compare the loads on wooden and steel stoplogs. Parallel work was conducted to develop analytical predictors for ice loads. Much progress has been made.

Models for calculating the loads that a marine screw propeller experiences during ice propeller interaction are developed. The interaction process and various contact geometry and interactions types are described. Some laboratory and full-scale experiments are briefly presented. The interaction process is described with a simulation model.
