In Chapter 5 of this book, it is shown that the formation of ice on the surface of a lake (‘ice-on’) and its thawing and ultimate disappearance (‘ice-off’) are complex phenomena governed by mechanisms that involve many interacting meteorological (and some non-meteorological) forcing factors. Linking ice phenology – the timing of ice-on and ice-off – to

Climatic effects on ice phenology and ice-jam flooding of the Athabasca River in western Canada
Hydrological Sciences Journal, 2019ABSTRACTIn cold region environments, any alteration in the hydro-climatic regime can have profound impacts on river ice processes.

Patterns and Trends in Southern Ontario Lake ice Phenology
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2003An analysis is presented of 46 ice break up and 15 ice free season phenology data series obtained largely through volunteer monitoring efforts in Southern Ontario. Observations spanned the years 1853-2001. Available data included dates of ice formation and ice break up as well as the number of ice free days in a year.

Shortening ice seasons and changing phenology affect under-ice lake thermal dynamics
2023Temperate lakes worldwide are losing ice cover but the implications for under-ice thermal dynamics are poorly constrained. Using a 90-year record of ice phenology from a temperate lake, we examined trends, variability, and drivers of ice phenology. The onset of ice formation decreased by 23 days century-1 which can be largely attributed to warming air ...

Sea ice phenology and timing of primary production pulses in the Arctic Ocean
Global Change Biology, 2012AbstractArctic organisms are adapted to the strong seasonality of environmental forcing. A small timing mismatch between biological processes and the environment could potentially have significant consequences for the entire food web. Climate warming causes shrinking ice coverage and earlier ice retreat in the Arctic, which is likely to change the ...

Investigating Lake Ice Phenology in Tibetan Plateau Using Satellite Data
IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019Lake ice phenology are considered as a sensitive indicator of global warming. In Tibetan Plateau (TP), differences exist in identifying lake ice phenology using remote sensing data because of the limited ground observation and difference in the sources of remote sensing and the available algorithms. In this study, four methods based on different remote

MODIS-observed variations of lake ice phenology in Xinjiang, China
Climatic Change, 2019Lakes sensitively respond to global and regional climate change, especially in arid areas. Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) daily snow products, the lake ice phenology of 23 lakes in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China from 2001 to 2018 was extracted based on thresholds of ice/water pixel numbers, and their change ...
