Modeling Ice Regime of Lake Erie

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1979
A thermodynamic model for ice formation, growth and dissipation was developed to simulate the ice regime of Lake Erie. The model utilizes the two-dimensional convective dispersion equation for the heat balance of the body of water and the interfacial heat exchange equations to account for the various heat exchange processes at the air-water, air-ice ...

Reservoir Operations and Their Effect on Ice Regime

Cold Regions Engineering, 2002
The Baltimore District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently undertook a study to determine whether a change in the operation of one of its flood control reservoirs would affect the degree of flood protection downstream. The intended operational change entails eliminating the current practice of providing an additional winter drawdown, which ...

ICE REGIME OF THE ABAKAN RIVER

Themed collection of papers from Foreign International Scientific Conference «Modern research on the way to a new scientific revolution». by HNRI «National development» in cooperation with AFP (Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua). November 2024. – Havana (Cuba)
The study of the ice regime of rivers is mandatory when designing hydraulic structures. The thickness of the ice affects the bearing capacity of the ice sheet, which is necessary to know when setting up crossings. The empirical method allows you to determine the thickness of the ice.

Temperature regime of antarctic fast ice

Polar Geography and Geology, 1981
Abstract Direct measurements of fast‐ice temperatures in Alasheyev Bight demonstrate the strong effect of snow cover on temperature amplitude. A change from cyclonic weather to drainage wind with low air temperature is accompanied by removal of part of the snow cover that acts as a thermal insulator, reducing the amplitude of the fast‐ice temperatures.

Ice Regime for Basins and Pumped-Storage Facilities

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
The article deals with various optional combinations of upper and lower basins in pumped-storage power plants (PSPP) which determine ice conditions that may appear on water surfaces, headwater discharge basins and slopes basins. There are also examples of calculation methods of ice regimes that are given in this article.

Regime of the Filchner–Ronne ice shelves, Antarctica

Nature, 1983
Seismic, radio-echo, TWERLE balloon and oceanographic data of the Filchner-Ronne ice shelves are analysed. A large thin area in the central Ronne Ice Shelf is found to differ from the morphology of the Ross and Filchner ice shelves. This area is partly filled by basal saline ice, which can be attributed to regional regelation caused by oceanic ...

Effect of river barrages on ice regime

Journal of Hydraulic Research, 1990
Ice regime of natural rivers is influenced by climate, water regime and channel morphology. Since channel morphology and water regime are influenced by river dams, changes in ice conditions can be expected. Ice appears commonly on the Hungarian rivers uninfluenced by human activities.

Impacts of Dam Removal on Riverine Ice Regime

Journal of Cold Regions Engineering, 2002
The impact of dam removal on the ice regime of northern rivers has largely been ignored in the recent push for removal of dams to restore or improve aquatic habitat.

A regime change in Arctic sea ice growth

The decline in Arctic sea ice thickness (SIT) is a key indicator response of the cryosphere to anthropogenic climate change. While the drivers of this decline are debated, they involve a competition between the ice-albedo positive feedback that enhances ocean heat content and the thin-ice negative feedback enhancing ice speed and alters dynamic ...
