Flow Resistance of River Ice Cover

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1986
An empirical model is developed for describing the time‐dependent variation of the hydraulic resistance coefficient of a river's ice cover as a function of weather and flow conditions. The physical implications of the model formulation are discussed along with its development.

Ship Resistance Validation Using Artificial Ice

Volume 8: Ian Jordaan Honoring Symposium on Ice Engineering, 2015
In 2013, the first model tests with artificial ice were performed in MARIN’s Concept Basin. A ‘fishbone’ type of channel was made out of rigid polypropylene (PP) particles, surrounded by large rigid PP plates, creating a testing case that is similar to pre-sawn ice conditions in refrigerated model test facilities.

Flow resistance of ice-covered streams

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1984
This paper deals with the underlying theory of the hydraulics of channel flow with a buoyant boundary as an ice cover. It commences by developing the velocity distribution in two-dimensional covered channel flow using the Reynolds form of the Navier–Stokes equation in conjunction with the Prandtl – Von Karman mixing length theory.

A Semi-Empirical Method of Ice Resistance Prediction in Level Ice

SNAME 11th International Conference and Exhibition on Performance of Ships and Structures in Ice, 2014
We introduce a semi-empirical model that can determine a ship’s performance in level ice based on Lindqvist’s model and develop a simple model for calculating ice resistance. This model assumes that contact between the ship and the ice is a case of symmetrical collision, and two contact cases are considered.

Ice Resistance Without Ice: Simulation of Ship Resistance in Ice Fields

1977
This paper deals with a series of six ice-breaking ship models with commercial hull forms, which have been systematically tested with the intention of gathering more information about resistance in ice. In contrast to conventional ice resistance tests, performed in real ice towing tanks and followed by complicated data regression, the tests discussed ...

Ice-Tank Observations on Barge Resistance in Brash-Ice

SNAME 25th American Towing Tank Conference, 1998
In many instances barges in ice-covered navigation channels must move through brash ice. The present paper presents ice-tank observations and data indicating the levels of resistance likely to be encountered by barges in brash ice. The ice-tank data are compared with a set of full-scale data obtained with barges moving through icecovered channels in ...

Ship resistance in thick brash ice

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1980
Abstract The mechanical properties of thick brash ice are considered, with special emphasis on the friction angle ф for a linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The static equilibrium of a uniform brash layer is discussed, and the internal stresses are given for neutral, active, and passive stress states.

Thermal shock resistance of plastic IC package

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1990
AbstractDual‐in‐line packages (DIPs) were formed from epoxy molding compounds with various physical properties using a transfer molding machine. The compounds were prepared by changing kinds and amounts of additives and addition methods. The thermal shock test was carried out by the following procedures.

Flow Resistance in Ice-Covered Alluvial Channels

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1997
This paper describes the influences of floating level ice covers on flow and bed-load transport in alluvial channels and proposes a semi-empirical procedure for calculating flow resistance in such channels. The procedure can be applied in conjunction with several existing methods for estimating flow resistance in alluvial channels under open-water ...
