LainePoiss®—A Lightweight and Ice-Resistant Wave Buoy
Abstract Wave buoys are a popular choice for measuring sea surface waves, and there is also an increasing interest for wave information from ice-covered water bodies. Such measurements require cost-effective, easily deployable, and robust devices. We have developed LainePoiss (LP)—an ice-resistant and lightweight wave buoy.

Ice roughness estimation via remotely piloted aircraft and photogrammetry [PDF]
The monitoring of fluvial ice covers can be time intensive, dangerous, and costly if detailed data are required. Ice covers on a river surface cause resistance to water flow, which increases upstream water levels.

Development of a dynamic model for ice-on-coil external melt storage systems [PDF]
Ice storage systems are commonly used to balance the intermittency of renewable energy and decrease the peak load by switching to off-peak hours. An adequate model is necessary to predict the behaviour of these systems.

Evaluating Ice Load during Submarine Surfacing and Ice Breaking
At present, the calculation method of ice load on surface navigation ships has been very mature, but the calculation method of submarine ice load is very few. The reasonable evaluation of submarine ice load has become an urgent problem to be solved.

Modeling the elastic transmission of tidal stresses to great distances inland in channelized ice streams [PDF]
Geodetic surveys suggest that ocean tides can modulate the motion of Antarctic ice streams, even at stations many tens of kilometers inland from the grounding line.

Study on the procedure to obtain an attainable speed in pack ice
The cost evaluation for voyage route planning in an ice-covered sea is one of the major topics among ship owners. Information of the ice properties, such as ice type, concentration of ice, ice thickness, strength of ice, and speed-power relation under ...

An experimental study of polymer electrolyte fuel cell operation at sub-freezing temperatures [PDF]
The ability of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) to startup at subfreezing temperatures is governed by whether it is able to overcome the freezing point (0°C) before product ice prevents the electrochemical reactions. In this work, we experimentally

Growth of ice on surfaces poses a challenge for both organisms and for devices that come into contact with liquids below the freezing point. Resistance of some organisms to ice formation and growth, either in subtidal environments (e.g.

Measurements of thermal properties of icy Mars regolith analogs [PDF]
In a series of laboratory experiments, we measure thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of icy regolith created by vapor deposition of water below its triple point and in a low pressure atmosphere.
