Water mass modification over the continental shelf north of Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica [PDF]
We use new data from the southern Weddell Sea continental shelf to describe water mass conversion processes in a formation region for cold and dense precursors of Antarctic Bottom Water. The cruises took place in early 1995, 1998, and 1999, and the time series obtained from moored instruments were up to 30 months in length, starting in 1995.

Precursors of Antarctic Bottom Water formed on the continental shelf off Larsen Ice Shelf [PDF]
The dense water flowing out from the Weddell Sea significantly contributes to Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) and plays an important role in the Meridional Overturning Circulation. The relative importance of the two major source regions, the continental shelves in front of Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf and Larsen Ice Shelf, however, remains unclear.

The BAS ice-shelf hot-water drill: design, methods and tools [PDF]
AbstractThe 2011/12 Antarctic field season saw the first use of a new British Antarctic Survey (BAS) ice-shelf hot-water drill system on the Larsen C and George VI ice shelves. Delivering 90 L min−1 at 80°C, a total of five holes >30 cm in diameter at three locations were successfully drilled through almost 400 m of ice to provide access to the ...

Ice shelf water overflow and bottom water formation in the southern Weddell Sea [PDF]
Cold shelf waters flowing out of the Filchner Depression in the southern Weddell Sea make a significant contribution to the production of Weddell Sea Bottom Water (WSBW), a precursor to Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). We use all available current meter records from the region to calculate the flux of cold water (<−1.9°C) over the sill at the northern

The Water Masses and Circulation at the Amery Ice Shelf
AM06 is a site upstream about 130 km of the calving front, where it was believed in a region with weak accreted marine ice near the 500 m ice shelf draft line west of Gillock Island. This borehole was melted through the shelf in January 2010, to access the ocean cavity.

Formation of ice-shelf moraines by accretion of sea water and marine sediment at the southern margin of the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica [PDF]
AbstractA combination of ground-penetrating radar surveys, physical sedimentology and ice composition measurements has been used to characterize ice and sediment accreted to the southern margin of the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The radar data and surface observations show that the ice-shelf margin consists of strongly layered debris-rich ice that ...

The Effect of a New Drag-Law Parameterization on Ice Shelf Water Plume Dynamics [PDF]
Abstract A drag law accounting for Ekman rotation adjacent to a flat, horizontal boundary is proposed for use in a plume model that is written in terms of the depth-mean velocity. The drag law contains a variable turning angle between the mean velocity and the drag imposed by the turbulent boundary layer.

Portable Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Sensor for Rapid Swab‐Based Detection of Norovirus
This work reports a rapid, portable smartphone‐based sensor capable of detecting four norovirus genotypes from swab samples within 15 min. Sensor selectivity was validated through evaluation against four common live viruses. The swab‐based sampling process enabled simple sample preparation combined with the compact detection system, supporting use of ...

Ionic epoxy networks are prepared using ammonium salts as hardeners, leading to a two‐stage curing process with a thermoplastic‐like intermediate. This uncommon behavior enables extrusion and fabrication of thermoplastic prepregs that can be cured into thermoset composites.
