Vibrational spectroscopy of ice interfaces
Applied Physics B, 2002Vibrational spectroscopy via infrared-visible sum-frequency generation was used to probe interfaces of hexagonal ice(0001) with vapor, a hydrophobic solid, and a hydrophilic solid. The OH stretch vibrational modes for hydrogen-bonded and free dangling OH bonds were measured at various temperatures below bulk melting.

VUV photoabsorption spectroscopy of sulfur dioxide ice
Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2006In this paper we present the first study of the VUV photoabsorption spectrum of condensed phase SO(2) recorded over the VUV region 120 to 320 nm (10.33 to 3.64 eV). Distinct spectral features were observed that can be used to distinguish between the formation of amorphous and crystalline ice structures.

The premelting of ice studied with photoelectron spectroscopy
Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2002We address the century-old puzzle of the existence of a liquid-like layer at the ice surface near its melting point with new photoelectron spectroscopic tools using synchrotron radiation. Near-edge x-ray absorption shows that a liquid-like film exists at temperatures as low as -20 °C. Near 0 °C this film is about 20 A thick, i.e., six bilayers.
