Order in Antarctic ice streams [PDF]

open access: yesNature Geoscience, 2015
Ice streams transport ice rapidly from the interior of the Antarctic ice sheet to the coast. An analysis of surface flow convergence suggests that ice flow and geometry are intricately linked within these ice streams.

Mixed‐Dimensional Floating Gate Phototransistors for Mixed‐Modal In‐Sensor Reservoir Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Designing bio‐inspired multisensory neuromorphic devices holds significant importance for low‐power and high‐efficiency computing. Here, the authors introduce a floating‐gate phototransistor based on the mixed‐dimensional heterostructure of 0D‐CsPbBr3 QDs and 2D‐MoS2 few layers.

Multi‐Omics and ‐Organ Insights into Energy Metabolic Adaptations in Early Sepsis Onset

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that patients at risk of sepsis have a distinct metabolite and lipid signature, including serine and aminoadipic acid, in their serum before clinical diagnosis. A mouse model of sepsis with a compatible serum signature reveals underlying metabolic changes, including mitochondrial adaptation, altered serine‐dependent purine metabolism ...

Ribbed bedforms on palaeo-ice stream beds resemble regular patterns of basal shear stress (‘traction ribs’) inferred from modern ice streams

open access: yes, 2016
Rapidly-flowing ice streams are an important mechanism through which ice sheets lose mass, and much work has been focussed on elucidating the processes that increase or decrease their velocity.

Circulating Tumor Cells Shed Shearosome Extracellular Vesicles in Capillary Bifurcations That Activate Endothelial and Immune Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using microfluidic models of capillary networks, this study discovered that fluid shear stresses on circulating tumor cells transiting through capillary‐sized bifurcations shed a novel class of shear‐dependent large extracellular vesicle, “shearosomes”, whose proteome comprises of over 3000 distinct proteins.

Thermal convection and the origin of ice streams [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2009
AbstractIce streams are a fact of ice-sheet dynamics, draining up to 90% of the ice. Thermal convection in ice below the density inversion is a speculation. An attempt is made to meld the two in such a way that the speculation becomes an explanation for the fact.
