Fracture Mechanics in Modeling of Icebreaking Capability of Ships

Journal of Cold Regions Engineering, 1993
The basis of the present paper is the approach suggested previously by the writers. By matching inner and outer solutions, a separate modeling of the deformation and fracture processes in stressed ice covers, taking into account the difference in relevant characteristic geometric and force parameters, is accomplished. In the outer problem, the scale is

“The US is an Arctic Nation”: policy, implementation and US icebreaking capabilities in a changing Arctic

The Polar Journal, 2013
This paper summarizes research on US Arctic policy implementation; specifically, the US Coast Guard’s implementation of security and environment-related goals that require polar icebreaking capacity. Although the US has relatively clearly stated its objectives in the region, resources have not been provided to enable the realization of those goals ...

The ice capability of the multipurpose icebreaker botnica-full scale results

1999
The trials of the new Finnish multipurpose icebreaker Botnica were performed on the northern Gulf of Bothnia. The main part of this paper consists of the results from the ice trials and their analysis. The results are compared with the results obtained in the ice model tests performed for the ship during the project phase.
