Discrete element modelling of relationship between ice breaking length and ice load on conical structure

, 2020
Conical structures are widely used in marine engineering in ice-covered area because of their icebreaking capability. The ice loads acting on the conical structures are closely related to the failure modes of sea ice. The discrete element method (DEM) is

Designing Electric Propulsion and Azipod ® Systems in Icebreaking Vessels

Day 1 Sun, July 20, 2008, 2008
An increasing part of world’s oil and gas reserves are located in Arctic areas. Year-around operations in these areas put strict requirement to the vessels that are supporting the offshore field, and the use of ice-going and ice-breaking vessels and oil ...

SMART with Trans-Critical CO2 power conversion system for maritime propulsion in Northern Sea Route, part 1: System design

, 2020
The Northern Sea Route is a new way to connect Asia and Europe. To utilize the sea route, merchant ships are required to have the icebreaking capability. Since conventional fossil fuel engines have limitations for the icebreaking merchant ship propulsion,

The U.S. Coast Guard Is Building an Icebreaker Fleet: What Comes Next? Issues and Challenges

, 2020
Icebreaking has long been an important capability gap in U.S. polar operations. The authors of this Perspective recommend that the U.S. Coast Guard (1) assess needs for additional icebreaking capacity; (2) ensure that new vessels are built for a changing,

“The US is an Arctic Nation”: policy, implementation and US icebreaking capabilities in a changing Arctic

The Polar Journal, 2013
This paper summarizes research on US Arctic policy implementation; specifically, the US Coast Guard’s implementation of security and environment-related goals that require polar icebreaking capacity. Although the US has relatively clearly stated its objectives in the region, resources have not been provided to enable the realization of those goals ...

The ice capability of the multipurpose icebreaker botnica-full scale results

1999
The trials of the new Finnish multipurpose icebreaker Botnica were performed on the northern Gulf of Bothnia. The main part of this paper consists of the results from the ice trials and their analysis. The results are compared with the results obtained in the ice model tests performed for the ship during the project phase.
