AI sea ice forecasts for Arctic conservation: A case study predicting the timing of caribou sea ice migrations

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 2, April–June 2025.
This case study explores how new AI‐driven sea ice forecasts can support Arctic wildlife conservation. Focusing on the waterways south of Victoria Island (Nunavut, Canada), we show that predicting freeze‐up dates could help anticipate Dolphin and Union caribou sea ice crossing times weeks in advance.

The Interannual Variability of Antarctic Fast‐Ice Thickness in McMurdo Sound and Connections to Climate

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 129, Issue 12, December 2024.
Abstract Land‐fast sea‐ice (fast ice) in McMurdo Sound grows through heat loss to the atmosphere and through heat loss to the ocean due to the presence of supercooled water. In this paper, we present a fast‐ice thickness data set covering 1986–2022, providing a baseline of interannual variability in fast‐ice thickness.

Proximity analysis between icebreakers and narwhals in Tasiujaq, Nunavut, Canada

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 88, Issue 8, November 2024.
This study looked at the proximity between icebreakers and narwhals in Tasiujaq, Nunavut, Canada. All icebreakers in the area had at least one encounter with a narwhal, approaching as close as less than 1 km. Cumulative time in proximity to vessels can have negative impacts on narwhals in their summering habitat.
