Energy harvesting from iced-conductor inspired wake galloping

Extreme Mechanics Letters, 2020
Abstract Energy harvesting from wake galloping of crescent-shape and D-shape cross-section bluff bodies inspired by galloping of iced conductors is investigated. Analytical models are derived in the framework of electromechanical extension of the Hamilton’s principle, Euler–Bernoulli beam assumption and quasi-steady hypothesis.

Rime icing on bundled conductors

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2019
With the increase of electric demand and development of high voltage technology, bundled conductors are used more frequently in new power line networks. Ice load on conductors is a major structural design criterion of power lines, and icing on bundled conductors is different from that on a single conductor because of the shadowing effect by the ...

Effects of Ice Surface and Ice Shape on Aerodynamic Characteristics of Crescent-Shaped Iced Conductors

Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2021
AbstractIn current galloping studies, the shape and surface of ice accretion are usually simplified to the regular and smooth properties, although they have the probability of irregularity and roug...

DC ice-melting model for elliptic glaze iced conductor

2010 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application, 2010
Both operating experiences and experiments show that the cross-section shape of iced conductor has an obvious influence on ice-melting time, however, it is ignored by almost all the existing ice-melting models which suppose that the iced conductor has a perfect circular cross-section shape.

Inertially Coupled Galloping of Iced Conductors

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1992
This paper is concerned with the galloping of iced conductors modeled as a two-degrees-of-freedom system. It is assumed that a realistic cross-section of a conductor has eccentricity; that is, its center of mass and elastic axis do not coincide. Bifurcation theory leads to explicit asymptotic solutions not only for the periodic solutions but also for ...

Nonlinear Numerical Simulation of Iced Conductor Galloping

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2010
A two-node cable element which the axial torsion and geometrical nonlinear were considered was developed based on the update Lagrange formulation, and a model of multi-span transmission line for galloping analysis was established. A nonlinear numerical simulation of single iced conductor galloping was proposed.

Temperature characteristic of DC ice-melting conductor

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2011
China is developing DC ice-melting method for the de-icing of overhead transmission lines after the ice storm in 2008. Melting ice apart, the Joule heat produced by DC heats the conductor. It is significant to investigate the temperature characteristic of the ice-melting conductors in order to protect the conductor from being damaged by overheating ...

Numerical Investigation on Transmission Line Conductor Icing

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
Ice accretion on transmission line conductor exists widely in nature, which can bring a lot of hazards. It is important and necessary to obtain characteristics of ice on different conductors for analyzing ice hazards or developing ice protection technology.

Galloping of Lightly Iced Conductors: An Explanation

Dynamics, Acoustics and Simulations, 1998
Abstract Stability of a stranded, sagged, lightly iced electrical power transmission cable subjected to aerodynamic forces and moment is studied. Small oscillations in three Cartesian directions about wind loaded equilibrium position and torsional oscillations are considered.

Effect of temperature on galloping of iced conductors

Advances in Structural Engineering, 2017
This article investigates the effect of temperature on galloping of iced conductors, accounting for the influence of sagging and geometric nonlinearity. By extending Irvine’s cable theory to thermo-elasticity problems, an analytical model is proposed to evaluate the effect of thermal stress on galloping of transmission lines.
