ICESat-2 laser technology development

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
A number of ICESat-2 system requirements drove the technology evolution and the system architecture for the laser transmitter Fibertek has developed for the mission.. These requirements include the laser wall plug efficiency, laser reliability, high PRF (10kHz), short-pulse (

ICESat-2 ATLAS telescope testing

2015 IEEE Aerospace Conference, 2015
Many lessons were learned in the comprehensive testing of the one meter Beryllium flight telescope for the ICESat-2 mission. This paper will focus on testing areas of encircled energy analysis, plate scale measurements, and boresight alignment for alignment of fiber optic cables.

ICESat-2 laser Nd:YVO4 amplifier

Components and Packaging for Laser Systems IV, 2018
We report on the cause and corrective actions of three amplifier crystal fractures in the space-qualified laser systems used in NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s (GSFC) Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2). The ICESat-2 lasers each contain three end-pumped Nd:YVOO4 amplifier stages.

ICESAT-2 altimetry for coastal MSS improvement

2023
Radar altimeters have traditioally been used for the determination of the mean sea surface to centimeter accuracy. However close to the coast the MSS degrade because of the lack of valid altimetry observations and because of the land contamination and the altimeter footprint size.

ICESat-2 Precision Orbit Determination Performance

2020
<p>The Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) mission launched on September 15th, 2018, with the primary goal of measuring ice sheet topographic change. The fundamental measurement used to achieve mission science objectives is the geolocation of individual photon bounce points.

The ICESat-2 Laser Altimetry Mission

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2010
Satellite and aircraft observations have revealed that remarkable changes in the Earth's polar ice cover have occurred in the last decade. The impacts of these changes, which include dramatic ice loss from ice sheets and rapid declines in Arctic sea ice, could be quite large in terms of sea level rise and global climate.
