Parasites in Curimata cyprinoides (Characiformes: Curimatidae) from eastern Amazon, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.19649

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2013
This work is the first study on parasitic fauna of Curimata cyprinoides Linnaeus, 1766 (Curimatidae) and the host-parasite relationship. The total of 154,740 parasites such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ciliophora), trophozoite of Spironucleus sp ...

Lipopeptide surfactant killing of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis: Mode of action

open access: yesAquaculture Reports, 2023
The lipopeptide SPH6 isolated from the bacterial strain Pseudomonas H6 has surfactant properties and shows a lethal effect on all external stages of the problematic gill parasitic ciliate Ichthyopthirius multifiliis. The mode of action has remained enigmatic, but in the present study we have elucidated the mechanisms. I.

Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Oils in Aquafeeds: Mechanistic Perspectives on Growth Promotion, Immunomodulation, and Stress Resilience

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The aquaculture industry is increasingly transitioning toward sustainable aquafeeds, driven by the economic and environmental necessity to replace marine‐derived fishmeal and fish oil with plant‐ and insect‐based alternatives. This nutritional shift introduces physiological challenges, accelerating the search for natural, sustainable functional ...

Utilização de produtos químicos no controle de Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Fouquet (1876) em alevinos de surubim do Iguaçu Steindachneridion sp., Garavello (1991)

open access: yesSemina: Ciências Agrárias, 2004
This experiment aimed to control the Ichthyophthirius multifiliis parasite in Steindachneridion sp. fingerlins. One hundred and eighty fingerlins distributed in an experimental delineation entirely randomized, with six treatments and six repetitions in ...

Parasitic Infections of Freshwater Fish in Kenya: Prevalence Patterns, Ecological Drivers, and Implications for Aquaculture Sustainability

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Fish parasitic infections present a growing threat to freshwater aquaculture in Kenya, affecting fish health, reducing productivity, and limiting the economic potential of small‐scale and commercial farms. This review provides the first consolidated national checklist of freshwater fish parasites in Kenya, synthesizing evidence from lakes, rivers, and ...

Insights into mucosal and systemic immune responses of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, to chilodonellosis: A natural infection study

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 107, Issue 4, Page 1323-1334, October 2025.
Abstract A natural parasitic infection with the external ciliate protozoan, Chilodonella hexasticha, was recorded 3 days post‐transportation (PT) in the gills and skin of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Infected fish displayed behavioural changes and typical signs of infection.

Diplostomum‐Induced Sac Formation in Lenses of Ameiurus Bullheads: A Host Defence Response?

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Trematodes of the genus Diplostomum (Diplostomidae) are widely distributed and significant fish pathogens known for causing a range of negative effects. Any mechanism that protects the host from the parasite thus represents an evolutionary advantage.

Severe Outbreak of Saprolegnia Spp. Infection in Spotted Snakehead (Channa punctata, Bloch 1793): Clinical Assessment, Histopathology, Haemato‐Biochemical Indices and Insights Into Therapeutic Effects

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 5, September 2025.
Spotted snakehead (Channa punctata) naturally infected with Saprolegnia spp. were confirmed by clinical signs, wet mount examination and histopathology. In the therapeutic trial using various chemotherapeutics, elevated temperature combined with 2% NaCl (T4) resulted in the highest survival rate (70%). ABSTRACT Saprolegniasis, caused by Saprolegnia spp.

Improving eel pass efficiency: The role of crest shape and water flow in facilitating upstream juvenile eel migration

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 107, Issue 2, Page 480-492, August 2025.
Abstract River connectivity is crucial for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) to complete its complex life cycle, which is vital for upstream recruitment to the declining population of this critically endangered catadromous fish. Eel passes, or ladders, are frequently installed on riverine structures, such as dams and weirs, to mitigate barrier ...
