Artificial intelligence in preclinical epilepsy research: Current state, potential, and challenges

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Preclinical translational epilepsy research uses animal models to better understand the mechanisms underlying epilepsy and its comorbidities, as well as to analyze and develop potential treatments that may mitigate this neurological disorder and its associated conditions. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool across

Ictal scalp EEG patterns are shaped by seizure etiology in temporal lobe epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia Open
Objective To investigate how etiology and seizure localization influence ictal scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Prenatal betamethasone–postnatal N‐methyl‐D‐aspartic acid model of spasms: Update on mechanisms and treatments

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Infantile epilepsy spasms syndrome (IESS), formerly known as infantile spasms or West Syndrome, is a severe epilepsy syndrome affecting about 3 in 10,000 newborns in the United States. Characterized by clusters of epileptic spasms, interictal hypsarrhythmia, and developmental delays, IESS has diverse causes, including structural‐metabolic ...

Seizures beget more than seizures: Understanding the cellular, structural, individual and societal impact of seizures in epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Epilepsy is primarily defined by the repetitive occurrence of seizures, but the full impact of seizures extends beyond these episodic events. Seizures themselves cause changes at the cellular, network, and systemic levels in individual patients with epilepsy and may contribute to the progressive nature of the disease in some patients. Seizures

Status epilepticus: Updates on mechanisms and treatments

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Status epilepticus (SE) consists of prolonged, self‐sustaining seizures and is a common neurological emergency that causes respiratory compromise and neuronal injury. Without prompt treatment, the seizures can become resistant to benzodiazepines, leading to the progressive evolution of established, refractory, and super‐refractory SE.

Late‐onset epilepsy of unknown etiology is more treatment‐responsive than acquired lesional late‐onset epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Late‐onset epilepsy of unknown etiology (LOEU) carries an elevated risk of dementia, suggesting that it may represent an early manifestation of neurodegenerative or cerebrovascular disease. Direct comparisons between LOEU and acquired lesional late‐onset epilepsy (LOE) may elucidate clinical features specific to LOEU.

Defining the role of systemic autoimmune markers in adult epilepsy: A focus on autoimmune‐associated epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Autoimmune mechanisms are a recognized cause of adult epilepsy, with immunotherapy offering etiology‐specific treatment. Autoimmune‐associated epilepsy is an emerging clinical entity, for which early diagnosis remains challenging and largely depends on neuronal antibody testing.
