Abstract Catfishes of the genus Ameiurus are a well-known component of the North American ichthyofauna. J. G. Lundberg estimated phylogenetic relationships among species of Ameiurus according to morphological variation. Two clades containing the extant species were recovered: the natalis clade (Ameiurus natalis, Ameiurus melas, and Ameiurus nebulosus ...

Selective Predation by Noturus insignis (Richardson) (Teleostei: Ictaluridae) in the Delaware River
American Midland Naturalist, 1993-Stomach contents of 403 margined madtoms Noturus insignis (Richardson), collected several times throughout 1988 and 1989 were examined. Insects in the families Baetidae, Chironomidae and Simuliidae, all of which have nocturnal drift patterns, were present in stomach samples in proportions higher than those in the environment.

Abstract 1. A study was performed using Ictalurus sp. specimens treated with benzidine in order to reveal the presence, or lack thereof, of micronuclei and any induced enzymatic alterations. 2. The peripheral blood slides showed that treatment with benzidine (80 mg/kg body weight) did not determine the presence of micronuclei. 3.

1. Extracellular unit spike responses have been recorded in the cerebellum of catfish during electroreceptive as well as several other kinds of stimulation. 2. Electric pulses in the water adequate to stimulate ampullary receptors activate some large cells of the cortex of the lobus caudalis pars lateralis and a few in the adjacent ...

Piscine venom glands have implicitly been assumed to be anti-predatory adaptations, but direct examinations of the potential fitness benefits provided by these structures are relatively sparse. In previous experiments examining this question, alternative phenotypes have not been presented to ecologically relevant predators, and the results are thus ...

Pancreatic islet cytology of ictaluridae (Teleostei)
Cell and Tissue Research, 1975The endocrine pancreas of the bullhead catfish, Ictalurus nebulosus, and the channel catfish, I. punctatas was studied by light and electron microscopy. In addition to the usual A, B and D cells, a fourth endocrine cell type was consistently observed in the electron microscope. All endocrine cell types were innervated. The vesicles of most of the nerve

Parental care sex differences in the brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus (Pisces, Ictaluridae)
Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 1986Males were the principal care-givers in the brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus. Direct observations on individually tagged adults in nature revealed that males attended broods at closer distances than females and were the most frequent lone care-givers.
