Linking rivers, mixing faunas: How artificial connectivity between the Middle and Upper Paraná River basins shapes fish diversity in a tributary of the Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract This work aimed to investigate the distribution and occurrence of fish species along the São Francisco Falso Braço Norte (SFFBN) River basin, a tributary of the Middle Paraná River basin now artificially connected to the Upper Paraná ecoregion, to evaluate how such connectivity may affect the biogeographic distribution and regional composition

Hybridization, Maternal Inheritance, and Evolutionary Time of Divergence of Endangered Species of Hypancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the Xingu River. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We uncover recent hybridization dynamics among three endemic Hypancistrus species from the Xingu River, including the critically endangered H. zebra. Mitogenomic analyses reveal unidirectional maternal inheritance and recent evolutionary radiation (< 0.5 Ma), explaining their retained reproductive compatibility.

Molecular characterization of Serrasalmidae hybrid in the upper Paraná River floodplain using molecular markers. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract This study reports the molecular identification of a tambacu—a hybrid of Colossoma macropomum and Piaractus mesopotamicus—in the floodplain of the upper Paraná River using molecular markers. The PCR‐GEL method, based on the analysis of COI and TROP fragments, successfully characterized the hybrid, while PCR‐SEQ, employing RAG2 and TROP markers,

External Morphology of Leporinus oliveirai (Characiformes: Anostomidae) During Early Life Stages. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Morphol
Herein, we describe the early development of Leporinus oliveirai, a recently described species, documenting its external morphology with photographs and illustrations. The ontogeny of L. oliveirai is compared with other anostomids and developmental patterns are described for the family.

Mammal defaunation leads to biotic homogenization of plant communities in tropical rainforests. [PDF]

open access: yesEcology
Abstract Biotic homogenization is the process in which species communities become increasingly similar across different regions over time. This phenomenon has substantial ecological, evolutionary, and economic implications, primarily driven by human activities such as habitat destruction, invasive species introduction, and climate change.

A new species of Characidium (Characiformes: Crenuchidae) from the Iguaçu National Park, Rio Iguaçu basin, Paraná, Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract A new species of Characidium is described from the Iguaçu National Park, Brazil. The new species can be diagnosed from the congeners by the absence of conspicuous vertical bars, blotches and spots along the sides of the body, the presence of a scaled isthmus and adipose fin, a series of scales below lateral line and the presence of a thin dark

Ictiofauna de los ambientes de piedemonte y sabana en el drenaje del río Casanare, cuenca del Orinoco, Colombia

open access: yesBiota Colombiana, 2018

MicroCT reinvestigation of the only articulated fossil anostomid fish reveals synonymy of Arhinolemur Ameghino, 1898 and Megaleporinus Ramirez et al., 2017

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Arhinolemur scalabrinii† Ameghino, 1898 was originally described as a strepsirrhine primate (Mammalia) but has been recognized as an anostomid fish since 2012. It remains the only extinct anostomid species known from complete cranial material.
