The longevity of water ice on Ganymedes and Europas around migrated giant planets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The gas giant planets in the Solar System have a retinue of icy moons, and we expect giant exoplanets to have similar satellite systems. If a Jupiter-like planet were to migrate toward its parent star the icy moons orbiting it would evaporate, creating atmospheres and possible habitable surface oceans.

Icy ocean worlds - astrobiology research in Germany

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences
Icy bodies with subsurface oceans are a prime target for astrobiology investigations, with an increasing number of scientists participating in the planning, development, and realization of space missions to these worlds.

Different ice shell geometries on Europa and Enceladus due to their different sizes: impacts of ocean heat transport [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
On icy worlds, the ice shell and subsurface ocean form a coupled system -- heat and salinity flux from the ice shell induced by the ice thickness gradient drives circulation in the ocean, and in turn, the heat transport by ocean circulation shapes the ice shell.

A Passive Probe for Subsurface Oceans and Liquid Water in Jupiter's Icy Moons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We describe an interferometric reflectometer method for passive detection of subsurface oceans and liquid water in Jovian icy moons using Jupiter's decametric radio emission (DAM). The DAM flux density exceeds 3,000 times the galactic background in the neighborhood of the Jovian icy moons, providing a signal that could be used for passive radio ...

Characterization of Icy Moon Hydrospheres Through Joint Inversion of Gravity and Magnetic Field Measurements

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Several bodies in the outer solar system are believed to host liquid water oceans underneath their icy surfaces. Knowledge of the hydrosphere properties is essential for understanding and assessing their habitability.

Inhalable Hsa‐miR‐30a‐3p Liposomes Attenuate Pulmonary Fibrosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study explores inhalable hsa‐miR‐30a‐3p‐loaded liposomes as a treatment for bleomycin‐induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice. Hsa‐miR‐30a‐3p is electroporated into liposomes and formulated into a dry powder for inhalation. Delivered via dry powder inhalation, it improves pulmonary function, promotes myofibroblast de‐differentiation by targeting CNPY2 ...

A recent origin for Saturn's rings from the collisional disruption of an icy moon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The disruption of an icy moon in a collision with an interloping comet a few hundred million years ago is a simple way to create Saturn's rings. A ring parent moon with a mass comparable to Mimas could be trapped in mean motion resonance with Enceladus and Dione in an orbit near the current outer edge of the rings just beyond the Roche zone.

The Nuclear Receptor NR1B1/RARα Arrests the Differentiation of Anti‐Tumor Effector Cytotoxic T Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
RARα is highly expressed by differentiated effector and exhausted T cells and exerts a negative effect on effector T cell differentiation and the associated trafficking receptor switch. Upregulated RARα levels decrease the nuclear histone acetylase (HAT) activity, and this suppresses the expression of key Teff transcription factor BATF and trafficking ...

Assessing the Ecophysiology of Methanogens in the Context of Recent Astrobiological and Planetological Studies

open access: yesLife, 2015
Among all known microbes capable of thriving under extreme and, therefore, potentially extraterrestrial environmental conditions, methanogens from the domain Archaea are intriguing organisms.
