Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Whole body oxygen uptake and evoked knee torque in response to low frequency electrical stimulation of the quadriceps muscles: V O2 frequency response to NMES

open access: yes, 2015
Background: There is emerging evidence that isometric Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) may offer a way to elicit therapeutically significant increases in whole-body oxygen uptake in order to deliver aerobic exercise to patients unable to ...

Electromagnetic Torque in Tokamaks with Toroidal Asymmetries

open access: yes, 2015
Toroidal rotation and rotation shear strongly influences stability and confinement in tokamaks. Breaking of the toroidal symmetry by fields orders of magnitude smaller than the axisymmetric field can, however, produce electromagnetic torques that ...

Matching of Internal Combustion Engine Characteristics for Continuously Variable Transmissions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This work proposes to match the engine characteristics to the requirements of the Continuously Variable Transmission [CVT] powertrain. The normal process is to pair the transmission to the engine and modify its calibration without considering the full
