Regulative idealization: A Kantian approach to idealized models

Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, 2023
Scientific models typically contain idealizations, or assumptions that are known not to be true. Philosophers have long questioned the nature of idealizations: Are they heuristic tools that will be abandoned? Or rather fictional representations of reality? And how can we reconcile them with realism about knowledge of nature?

Informative Models: Idealization and Abstraction

2021
Mauricio Suárez and Agnes Bolinska apply the tools of communication theory to scientific modeling in order to characterize the informational content of a scientific model. They argue that when represented as a communication channel, a model source conveys information about its target, and that such representations are therefore appropriate whenever ...

THE ANNIHILATING IDEALS OF MINIMAL MODELS

International Journal of Modern Physics A, 1992
We describe several aspects of the annihilating ideals and reduced chiral algebras of conformal field theories, especially, minimal models of Wn algebras. The structure of the annihilating ideal and a vanishing condition is given. Using the annihilating ideal, the structure of quasi-finite models of the Virasoro (2,q) minimal models are studied, and ...

The self ideal versus the model ideal

Journal of Religion and Health, 1982
A list of 50 ways of perceiving one's personal ideal was constructed and administered to 74 women about to make a lifelong commitment. The mean number of items endorsed was 28. An item analysis yielded discrimination indices for 28 items at better than the .05 level of significance.

A MODEL WITH A PRECIPITOUS IDEAL, BUT NO NORMAL PRECIPITOUS IDEAL

Journal of Mathematical Logic, 2013
Starting with a measurable cardinal κ of the Mitchell order κ++ we construct a model with a precipitous ideal on ℵ1 but without normal precipitous ideals. This answers a question by T. Jech and K. Prikry. In the constructed model there are no Q-point precipitous filters on ℵ1, i. e. those isomorphic to extensions of Cubℵ1.
