Terror leaves adolescents behind: Identifying risk and protective factors for high‐school completion among survivors of terrorism

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 750-761, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Terror exposure increases the risk of somatic and psychological health problems in survivors. Yet, knowledge of how such exposure affects survivors’ ability to stay in school is lacking. This study examined whether exposure to the 2011 Utøya terrorist attack in Norway impacted survivors’ ability to complete high school.

Contrasting ecological information content in whaling archives with modern cetacean surveys for conservation planning and identification of historical distribution changes

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 3, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Many species are restricted to a marginal or suboptimal fraction of their historical range due to anthropogenic impacts, making it hard to interpret their ecological preferences from modern‐day data alone. However, inferring past ecological states is limited by the availability of robust data and biases in historical archives, posing a ...

Estimation of additive genetic variance when there are gene–environment correlations: Pitfalls, solutions and unexplored questions

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 5, Page 1245-1258, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Estimating the genetic variation underpinning a trait is crucial to understanding and predicting its evolution. A key statistical tool to estimate this variation is the animal model. Typically, the environment is modelled as an external variable independent of the organism, affecting the focal phenotypic trait via phenotypic plasticity.

Large‐scale movement patterns in a social vulture are influenced by seasonality, sex, and breeding region

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
Griffon vulture home‐range sizes and home‐range fidelity are affected by seasonality, sex, and breeding region. Vultures tend to move more during spring and summer, and females showed higher home‐range sizes than males, but lower home‐range fidelity.

Plant biodiversity assessment through soil eDNA reflects temporal and local diversity

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 2, Page 415-430, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Several studies have shown the potential of eDNA‐based proxies for plant identification, but little is known about their spatial and temporal resolution. This limits its use for plant biodiversity assessments and monitoring of vegetation responses to environmental changes.

Scientific contributions of citizen science applied to rare or threatened animals

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 6, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Citizen science is filling important monitoring gaps and thus contributing to the conservation of rare or threatened animals. However, most researchers have used peer‐reviewed publications to evaluate citizen science contributions. We quantified a larger spectrum of citizen science's contributions to the monitoring of rare or threatened ...
