V.—The Constitution of the Igneous Rocks [PDF]

open access: yesGeological Magazine, 1909
In a paper read at the 1903 meeting of the British Association and afterwards published in this Magazine, the method of calculating the chemical constitution of the igneous rocks by the collation of analyses was criticized, and the results were compared with those based on actual field-work in an area where such rocks were very abundant. Mr. F.

Millennial‐scale oscillations and an environmental regime shift around the Middle to Late Holocene transition in the North Atlantic region based on a multiproxy record from Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 52, Issue 1, Page 42-59, January 2023., 2023
Palynological and sedimentological analyses were performed on the sediment core HH16‐1205‐GC retrieved from the central Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen. The sequence, which spans the last 7000 years, revealed an overall cooling trend with an important climate shift between 4.4 and 3.8 cal. ka BP, in addition to millennial‐scale oscillations.

Challenges of identifying putative planetary-origin meteorites composed of non-igneous material [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
This concept article discusses the challenges of identifying planetary-origin meteorites of non-igneous composition, primarily of sedimentary origin, distinct from SNC meteorites. The paper reviews evidence on putative sedimentary-origin meteorites and potential parent bodies for sedimentary meteorites.

Influences of Permian igneous rock on seismic imaging of underlying strata in the Hanilcatam area, Tarim Basin, China

open access: yesJournal of Natural Gas Geoscience, 2019
Large-scale Permian igneous rock is developed in the Hanilcatam area, Tarim Basin. In order to accurately capture influences of thick igneous rock on seismic imaging of its underlying strata based on actual drilling, well logging and 3D seismic data, the

XXI. The Igneous Rocks of Bute [PDF]

open access: yesTransactions of the Geological Society of Glasgow, 1916
The geological claims of Bute seem always to have been overshadowed by the near presence of Arran, with its superior size and variety of formations. MacCulloch, in his “Geology of the Western Islands” (1819, p. 445), devotes some space to emphasising the importance of Bute geologically, and then dismisses the island in twenty-nine pages. Bryce, in his “

Analysis of Multifractal Characteristics and Detrended Cross-Correlation of Conventional Logging Data Regarding Igneous Rocks

open access: yesFractal and Fractional
In the current context of the global energy landscape, China is facing a growing challenge in oil and gas exploration and development. It is difficult to evaluate the log data because of the lithological composition of igneous rocks, which displays an ...

Towards OWL-based Knowledge Representation in Petrology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2011
This paper presents our work on development of OWL-driven systems for formal representation and reasoning about terminological knowledge and facts in petrology. The long-term aim of our project is to provide solid foundations for a large-scale integration of various kinds of knowledge, including basic terms, rock classification algorithms, findings and

Influence of the Elastic Dilatation of Mining-Induced Unloading Rock Mass on the Development of Bed Separation

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Understanding how mining-induced strata movement, fractures, bed separation, and ground subsidence evolve is an area of great importance for the underground coal mining industry, particularly for disaster control and sustainable mining.

A Fracture-Surface in Igneous Rock [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1920
THE accompanying photograph (Fig. 1) was taken by me some years ago during the construction of the Shirawta Dam, Bombay Hydro-Electric Works, India. It shows a curious fracture surface due to a heavy gelignite detonation in finely crystalline “trap” rock. So far as I can remember I had seen other examples of this phenomenon, but photographed this as it

The relationship between cellular protein content and selenium accumulation in freshwater microalgae

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, EarlyView.
Abstract Variability in the bioconcentration of selenium (Se) by primary producers at the base of the food web results in uncertainty in predictions of bioaccumulation and ecological risk to higher trophic level organisms. Water chemistry, speciation of Se, and periphyton community composition have all been suggested as factors that contribute to ...
