Human decimation caused bottleneck effect, genetic drift, and inbreeding in the Canarian houbara bustard

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 87, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
We describe the genetic characteristics and dynamics, and the recent evolutionary history of the Canarian houbara bustard, an endemic to the Canary Islands. We identified high gene flow and two genetic units, with genetic bottlenecks and subsequent inbreeding in both of them, and propose potential management actions to avoid its extinction. Abstract An

Soil Depth Prediction Model Using Terrain Attributes in Gangwon-do, South Korea

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
Soil depth is a crucial parameter in slope stability analysis in mountainous areas. The drilling survey is the most reliable method for determining soil depth, but it requires a high cost for the vast geographical area.

Cost‐effective in‐mine seismic experiments to image platinum deposits and associated geological structures at Maseve platinum mine, South Africa

open access: yesNear Surface Geophysics, Volume 20, Issue 6, Page 572-589, December 2022., 2022
ABSTRACT The detection of mineral deposits and their related geological structures is of great importance to the mining industry as structures (such as dykes and faults) can affect the safety, cost and efficiency of mining. With the goal of testing cost‐effective seismic methods for mineral exploration and mining, active and passive seismic experiments

VapoRock: Thermodynamics of vaporized silicate melts for modeling volcanic outgassing and magma ocean atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Silicate vapors play a key role in planetary evolution, especially dominating early stages of rocky planet formation through outgassed magma ocean atmospheres. Our open-source thermodynamic modeling software "VapoRock" combines the MELTS liquid model (Ghiorso et al., 1995) with gas-species properties from multiple thermochemistry tables (e.g., Chase et

The Igneous Rocks of Iceland [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1881
LAST year a friend and I rode round the north and west sides of Iceland, and from my observations then I cannot doubt that the conclusions to which Dr. J. Geikie has arrived concerning the south-west of the island apply equally to the more northerly parts.
