A Stand-Off Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) System Applicable for Martian Rocks Studies
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a valuable tool for evaluating the geochemical characteristics of Martian rocks and was applied in the Tianwen-1 Mars exploration mission with the payload called Mars Surface Composition Detection Package ...

Abstract This article reviews the pathological changes in the enamel of permanent mandibular cheek teeth and their sequelae in European roe deer from regions polluted by anthropogenic fluoride emissions. The primary (developmental) changes of fluorotic roe deer enamel are hypomineralization and microstructural aberrations, including enamel hypoplasia ...

Geochemical discrimination and characteristics of magmatic tectonic settings; a machine learning-based approach [PDF]
Geochemically discriminating between magmatism in different tectonic settings remains a fundamental part of understanding the processes of magma generation within the Earth's mantle. Here, we present an approach where machine-learning (ML) methods are used for quantitative tectonic discrimination and feature selection using global geochemical datasets ...

The history of anatomical engagement
Abstract The public's fascination with anatomy has evolved over time and progressed from avoidance of the tainted yet saintly corpse, to their fascination with cabinets of curiosities. The current narrative review explores public engagement (PE), from its potential origins as cave paintings, to the rise of the disciplinarity of anatomy.

Attitudes to Pregnancy, Childbirth and Postnatal Complications in Medieval English Miracula
Abstract This article re‐examines the evidence about childbirth and related topics in the posthumous miracle collections of English saints. It finds forty‐eight such miracles in collections of thirteen English saints, mostly from the century or so after 1170. The article argues that the context in which the stories were composed is vitally important to

Unsupervised Classification of Intrusive Igneous Rock Thin Section Images using Edge Detection and Colour Analysis [PDF]
Classification of rocks is one of the fundamental tasks in a geological study. The process requires a human expert to examine sampled thin section images under a microscope. In this study, we propose a method that uses microscope automation, digital image acquisition, edge detection and colour analysis (histogram).

Paleohydrology on Mars constrained by mass balance and mineralogy of pre-Amazonian sodium chloride lakes [PDF]
Chloride-bearing deposits on Mars record high-elevation lakes during the waning stages of Mars' wet era (mid-Noachian to late Hesperian). The water source pathways, seasonality, salinity, depth, lifetime, and paleoclimatic drivers of these widespread lakes are all unknown.

An Experimental Investigation of the Scaling of Columnar Joints [PDF]
Columnar jointing is a fracture pattern common in igneous rocks in which cracks self-organize into a roughly hexagonal arrangement, leaving behind an ordered colonnade. We report observations of columnar jointing in a laboratory analog system, desiccated corn starch slurries.

Abstract We very much appreciate the comments of André; Pestilho and Agustin Mors on our paper discussing the early diagenesis of the Pre‐salt carbonates (Barra Velha Formation, BVF) in the Santos Basin (Gomes et al., 2024). We welcome the opportunity to respond and to clarify our interpretations concerning dolomite formation, diagenetic timing and ...
